“Star older than universe” —What?

Fascinating article, personally i wonder if the star is truly from our universe or from somewhere further away.
A star which somehow escaped dissolution of a previous universe - grace of God, must have been populated solely by pious people with no sinners. Or is that heaven? :D

Star that’s older than the universe

Any thoughts?

Something’s wrong. Right?

(Or something’s right. Wrong? Or left. Right?)

Not entirely sure why this has cropped up again - it's old news.

Article from 2013 (the first estimate put it at 16 billion years old): Strange 'Methuselah' Star Looks Older Than the Universe
Paper from 2013: HD 140283: A STAR IN THE SOLAR NEIGHBORHOOD THAT FORMED SHORTLY AFTER THE BIG BANG

It's interesting and may help our understanding of the universe but @Kangaroo Feathers is right, it seems to have been overblown by science journalists.

From the above paper:

"Employing modern theoretical isochrones, which include effects of helium diffusion, revised nuclear reaction rates, and enhanced oxygen abundance, we use the precise distance to infer an age of 14.46 ± 0.31 Gyr. The quoted error includes only the uncertainty in the parallax, and is for adopted surface oxygen and iron abundances of [O/H] = -1.67 and [Fe/H] = -2.40. Uncertainties in the stellar parameters and chemical composition, especially the oxygen content, now contribute more to the error budget for the age of HD 140283 than does its distance, increasing the total uncertainty to about ±0.8 Gyr. Within the errors, the age of HD 140283 does not conflict with the age of the Universe, 13.77 ± 0.06 Gyr, based on the microwave background and Hubble constant, but it must have formed soon after the big bang."

Who said the other universe was dissolved? Maybe there is more than one universe.

Figuring out the age of a star is tricky business. It depends on the composition of the star, knowing its distance (so we know brightness and hence energy usage), and comparison with models of stellar evolution.

In this case, it is far more likely the age calculation for the star is off than it is that the current estimate for the age of the universe is off (which is a much more direct measurement).

When the accelerating expansion rate of the universe was first discovered, it looked like several white dwarf ages were more than the age of the universe. That didn't turn out to be the case, but we learned a bit about white dwarfs in the process.

Polar ice is older than the creo-universe.
Yeah, older than 6,000 years. Science is a complete BS.
I can believe it if that "star" is Keith Richards...
There is no star in the universe other than Priyanka Chopra, the former Indian Miss Universe.

I hope something here sinks in for you.

One huge difference between a religious view and a scientific view is the willingness to change opinions as new data comes in. That's why science is a better way to understand reality than religion. Sciency people don't cling to delusion the way religionists do.

The subtext is "see, science is so undependable, gives
absurd results, but GAWD stayeth always the same."

Dating a star is done using spectroscopy. A star can be dated by its composition. This star is low in iron meaning it formed before iron was abundant.

To my understanding iron was not formed until the first stars died. So older than the universe??? I am doubtful but almost as old as the universe, i think so.

What surprised me is that the star is still burning
