Jai Shri KRshNa

A 15 day countdown to KAnhU's JanmAshTami.

BAAla MukundAskTaka

Lyrics and translation in the comment by poster.

karAravinde padAravindam |
mukhAravinde viniveshayantam |
vaTasya patrasya puTe shayAnam |
bAlamukundam manasA smarAmI || 1 ||

I meditate on Baby Mukunda lying on a Banyan leaf, Who catches His Lotus Foot with His little Lotus Hand and puts it in His Lotus Mouth. (This is how Rshi MArkanDeya saw the Lord as the only entity after the demo-mAyA-deluge that Lord NArAyaNa showed him on the chiranjivi Rshi's request to witness MAyA.

Jai Kanhaiyya lal ki!
Dedicated to the Uttamshloka yet again this year - JanmAshTami special bhajan for your ears.

AshTami tithi ; nisht kaal after midnight ; RohiNi nakshatra begins after ashTami is over.

(RohiNi nakshatra - constellation is sought because when Shri KRshNa appeared on earth, the moon was in the RohiNi constellation. Many times, we are in this constellation around KRshNa JanmAshTami. This year the earth will be in RohiNi slightly after ashTami is over)

Govinda DAmodara MAdhaveti - Pandit Jasraj

sukhAvasAne idam eva sAraM
dukhAvasAne idam eva dneyaM
dehAvasAne idam eva jApyaM
Govinda ! Damodara ! MAdhava ! iti

(When happiness arrives, this (remembering names of Govinda) is the gist and source
When there is sorrow, this is all there is to know - names of KRshNa
At the time of death, and leaving the body, chant (japa) the names of Shri KRshNa
[such as] Govinda DAmodara MAdhava etc. thus (iti) )

:praying::hand:

SriKrishna sharanam mama.

My wife said this time there were two Janmashtamis. 18th as well as 19th (sort of spilling over to the next day). We are celebrating Janmashtami today.

May the Lord bring happiness to all denizens of the world.

Viraja

Jaya Jagannatha!
Happy, happy, happy Janmashtami to all who celebrate!

If you would tune into ISKCON Bangalore today in Youtube you get blissful chants. Been watching it this morning. I think they are scheduled for 24 hrs non-stop or perhaps even more! :D

Shri KRshNa sharaNam mama

Yes. Technically, ashTami was on 18th. So the midnight nisheetkaal of/after the 18th i.e. 19th AM is JanmAsTami.
However, Rohini nakshatra began a few hrs after ashTami ended on the 19th.
So, if RohiNi was 5 days away they would say it is 18th, but since it was so close, some prefer the midnight of Rohini Nakshatra i.e. 20th AM and call it GokuLAshTami, when usually it would be treated as Nandotsav.

Besides, some VaishNav calendars consider 19th as the JanmAshTami because it was ashTami at sunrise on the 19th

Every year there is a smArta and a VaishNav JanmAshTami for these varying reasons (tithi at sunrise (VaishNav) versus nisheet kaal priority (smArta) )

This year it was ashTami at sunrise for 2 days I believe, in many regions, plus the onset of Rohini nakshatra. We were truly lucky this year. A gift from BhagavAn :blush:
