Hadith says yawning is from Shaitan

Epic Beard Man

Bearded Philosopher
"The question of why we yawn evokes a surprising amount of controversy for what is a relatively minor field of study. We don’t have evidence that can point us to the exact purpose of yawning.

But there are several theories about the purpose of yawning. These include increasing alertness, cooling the brain, and the evolutionary theory of alerting others in your group that you’re too tired to keep watch, and someone else should take over."

Health Check: why do we yawn and why is it contagious?

Of course, you googled "why do we yawn" but look at the scholarly articles.

"Yawning subsequently functions to keep the brain temperature balanced and in optimal homeostasis. According to this theory, yawning should also be easily manipulated by ambient temperature variation, since exchange with cool ambient air temperature may facilitate lowering brain temperature. Specifically, the researchers hypothesized that yawning should only occur within an optimal range of temperatures, i.e., a thermal window.

Still looks like a theory to me.

But you're making the consensus that since it is theory therefore the only default claim that has been made was because God hates yawning because Satan enters the mouth which is a dubious claim. My position here is that although research is ongoing on the use of yawning, there is a consensus that yawning in effect, has several useful factors regarding the human physiology.

Oh I see. Your argument changes significantly. I guess then we agree more or less.

Don't twist my words.

Could there be a scientific explanation?

No scientific explanations involve any devils/demons/angels/..., no matter what they are called

Is there a specific scientific reason found for yawning?

Yes, several. One of them being non-verbal communication.
What you are saying when you yawn while someone is talking, is "I'm tired, but I'm trying to stay awake to listen to you'"

"The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Yawning is from Satan and if anyone of you yawns, he should check his yawning as much as possible, for if anyone of you (during the act of yawning) should say: 'Ha', Satan will laugh at him.""

"The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Allah loves sneezing but dislikes yawning; so if anyone of you sneezes and then praises Allah, every Muslim who hears him (praising Allah) has to say Tashmit to him. But as regards yawning, it is from Satan, so if one of you yawns, he should try his best to stop it, for when anyone of you yawns, Satan laughs at him.""

"When one of you yawns, he should keep his mouth shut with the help of his hand, for it is the devil that enters therein."

Just one more reason that suggests this religion is man's invention and not some all-knowing entity.

My argument is that yawning is natural. What is your argument?
You explained the reason for yawning. I said it's one theory. You asked if you really need to...... Insinuating I was wrong and that I could find proof for it if I searched. It turns out there is no proof.

I already said in my response to you earlier that the hadith is not saying yawning is not natural. Yawning is natural. That helps us none regarding the topic.

I believe the reason is that Hadiths rarely have much truth to them. It has all the earmarks of a superstition.

Hi,

First thanks for posting this post that I liked a lot.

Then, I don't think that the debate between the believers in Islam, and those who disbelieve, should be on the details of the laws.

As the details, such as many laws are consequence of the main topic, which is the truthiness of God and his messenger.

In this life we don't understand everything, so when our prophet, in whom we believe tell something about anything, we accept his saying.

We do not expect the disbelievers to share this acceptance with us.

Now the issue of which Hadiths are authentic is another topic.

And from here I go to the third point:

I start to first express my respect to my Sunni brothers and sisters, as I wanted to say that we, as Shia Muslims, take the Hadith from the Ahlulbayt (a.s.) Imams.

We don't take our Hadith from the Sunni books for many reasons , including the matter that the Sunni Hadith as the Sunni themselves say has been written mainly in the second Islamic century.

However, our Hadiths also say that Yawning is from Satin.

We also have other Hadiths explaining this phrase.

And here I have to say that many anti-Islam posters would start to target Islam without paying effort to understand the Islamic point that they are criticizing.

The concept of Satan is not an easy concept.

If something is form Satan, it does not mean that it does not have a scientific explanation.

Now I will post some other Hadiths that shed light in this Hadith. Here is what they contain of meanings, as I am not going to translate them.

The main point mentioned here is that Yawning is a result of laziness, which we are commanded to avoid. However the Hadith says that Yawning is beyond our control, so we should not extend it, and we should cover our mouth wile Yawning.

That is it.

Now let me express our love of our beautiful Islam and its great manners.

Best regards to all.
