Is a Flat Tax Fair?

Because@jollybear Because we have a progressive tax system and because we have a democracy. People who make more do so because of the investment in government that We, the People make. We, the People pool our money collectively and use it to build the infrastructure that lets people make so much money. That's the roads, schools, police, courts, etc. -- the whole system -- that provides the foundation for our businesses to go out and compete in the world. And when our businesses do well, we ask them to pay back a dividend to the rest of us for enabling that to happen. In a flat tax system none of that happens

How do you know the roads would not get built? They sure would under a flat tax.

Government needs to shrink, plus, government needs to stop wasteful spending.

That one dollar you are taking away from the poor man might mean his next meal. 10% is a sizable chunk of change to a poor person whereas with Bill Gates he could lose a million in his couch and not miss a thing
Please help me on this one... honest question...

Does the poor man then not have food stamps and other subsidized helps when you have a flat tax?

Because we live in a totally just world where bad things never happen

Bad things happen. I've lost everything and been homeless twice myself. With some help from friends willing to give me a place to live both times it took me exactly 1 year to save up, buy a used car for $1,000-$5,000. After that I save up about $3,000 to move out and rent an apartment of my own.

Wasn't easy, just had to stay away from drugs, alchohol, and bad influences. Was lonely and boring at times, but it's better than pan handling on the street.

Does every poor man have food stamps now? Just because a person is poor doesn't mean they are on the public dole

I've answered that question at the beginning, Mr. Sealion. I am not going to ****ing repeat myself

Oh that it puts the tax burden on the poor? You know thats a load of crap. The ritch will be paying more dollars then the poor. Its just the same percent.

Give me a break.

You must have a communist spirit, eh?

Because a flat tax would bring in less revenue for the government to fund social programs or build side walks that you walk on or roads that u drive on.

I would have no problem with a "Flat tax" as long as to balance it out there was a wealth tax. The cost to protect the wealth of the rich is not properly reflected in the tax code. That means that the owner of Amazon would have to pay a percentage of his net worth every year. That would be an indexed tax starting perhaps with people that had a million dollars or more in assets. A simple 1% would be adequate to start, but I would want a real specialist to figure it out.

Nope because in a flat tax system the government will bring in less revenue and won’t be able to fund social programs

Oh. The old

'Pull Yourself Up By Your Bootstraps' Argument

The problem is you are only viewing the issue from one side.

I have lived both sides.

I have been homeless and needed help. I received that help from friends. Worked hard, saved up money, didn't try to bang my friends wife, didn't steal all their belongings to pawn for a quick fix.

And I have been the one to extend my hand out and help those in need. Just to have all my stuff stolen, or they give in to temptation and come stoned of their rocker, or bring drama back to house that I have to deal with.

I know how this works. Those that put in the work, have a higher chance at success than those that don't, end of story.

Now there is exemptions for physically/mentally disabled people, war torn vets, an elderly who aren't able to support themselves for reasons they can't help. No problem with helping those folk out.

But if the reason someone can't pull themselves up is because they can't resist drugs, alchohol, sex, gambling etc. Then I don't have much sympathy for them. Because most of them are choosing to stay that way.

i just trying to see the pro's and con's.

I'm sure there are always exceptions in every case. It could be just as true as the one who isn't on the public cole, doesn't want to be and is working hard to get out of poverty.

But if the flat tax doesn't eliminate the food stamp capacity then wouldn't their $1 tax be irrelevant? Even those on social security still pay something if they get rent help. Rich people wouldn't.

Nonsense. Because pulling yourself up by the bootstraps is physically impossible.

And the irony is always lost on the people who use the phrase as a political cudgel.

That's just intellectually dishonest.

It's a metaphor. Here I'll help ya out since you didn't graduate elementary school apparently.

Don't understand. If you eliminate loop holes, doesn't that translate into the rich paying more? Because there aren't loop holes?

No it wouldnt. If the government would stop wasteful spending and subsidies. And drain there bearacratic swamp.
