…...........if it could be proved beyond any shadow of doubt no god or afterlife exist, when you die you are no more?

I would be relieved that once my life is over that is it, end of story. I am of the opinion that is the case, but of course there is the outside possibility I am wrong.

I have asked this question on forums before, often the reaction from devout believers is that god/afterlife exist and there is no other possibility.

Over to you.

I'd lose all interest in religion as no afterlife and no God would make it all false, and if it was all false then I wouldn't be interested in it

I find that hard to believe, but if it is so let me be the first theist of your acquaintance to answer thus - I would probably connect with the Secular Humanistic Judaism movement and then go on with the business of living my life.
An awesome reply, and to be fair and honest, I am probably embellishing, or my memory is biased. I swear I have so often see an initial reply (again, I'm talking about first trying this tack, not that they repeatedly refuse to answer) that "it doesn't matter, because God exists" that I can't remember if in there any time I've seen it asked was some actual response to the question posed outright - but again, could be my bias ignoring those replies and honing in on all the people unwilling to respond.

It might not be too hard to find an older thread where the OP asked something similar. I'll have a look and maybe get a percentage of theists who first dodged the question as I mentioned, and how many answered outright. Could be interesting.

You're a Christian right? If God doesn't exist would that take away from the power of the cross? What does the cross mean to you?

Over to you.

No difference.
Even when i was a strong believer(in God), I never even considered the idea of an afterlife.

My father used to verbally scold me for never thinking about the future. The present fills my time.

What does the cross mean to me?

I recognise that it is primarily the symbol of Christianity

But to me it signifies Christ's sacrifice (on the cross) and the prospect of eternal life and the existence of a concerned and personal God etc.

A god that was so concerned it is supposed to have a created a child to have it die for the mess it made when creating humanity!

That sound very human of that god because lots of people do just that. Have children so that their children in the future will fix the mess the parents are making in the present

and Man is therefore a mystery with no resolve
and no purpose

extinction the only end

Yes, you got it. With the possible exception of the “mystery” thing. Congratulations.

This did happen to me. The question is whether the theist is one because they want an afterlife or not. "Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it." is a quote from the gospel of Matthew.

I think what you will find in a survey of the history of ministry is that in all cultures, everywhere and in all time periods people are seeking for someone to assure them good things, and they get what they are looking for. They get people to tell them they will win the battle or that they will have a fortunate year. This is a very hard truth about people. Nobody wants to be told "It will be another hard year for you, but chin up." Nobody pays for that, and so you have a history of ministry which doesn't like to say that.

You and others mention that theists are closed minded, but you seem to be micro focusing. Everybody does this. Everybody is all about hearing only good fortunes. What is it you think that makes you any different just because you accept death with finality? You wouldn't be manipulated by these methods? Its them not you? That does sound like good news and self comforting.

That is the way you see, but I don't.
Ok. You asked for my thoughts. Do you have anything to add besides this? I thought you were interested in a discussion? Sort of a conversation killer response there....

Belief is about faith, not proof. Believers will continue to find reasons to believe. Non-believers will continue on as before. Nothing will change in the universe.
