the definition of socialism

One can have capitalism and policies which provide any social benefit desired.
And it looks more capable of doing that than socialism.
Thank you! As a Canadian leaning a little to the left, I am a firm capitalist, yet I happily vote to pay some taxes to ensure we meet some minimal standard in providing needed social benefits. And I happily pay those taxes while I am still gainfully employed, knowing how very likely it is that I might need some of those services someday. I'll tell you, a 2 year bout with my partner's Guillaine Barre Syndrome, the cost of which is now over 7 figures, none of which was paid by us, makes me a true believer. I had tax owing this past April, and I happily remitted it on the same day that I filed my return.

I'd have made it a <like>, but your post warranted more.

Now it's threatening people who walk and text.

New York might make it illegal to text while walking - CNN

Once again Democrats socialist demonstrate their willingness to control what you can and cannot do and Implement yet another money grab. It's all they know how to do with people.

Is this just about making it illegal to cross the street while looking at a phone's screen or does it also apply to sidewalks ?

Here's more context on the situation:
Pedestrian Safety

If a state implemented no texting while driving, would you consider them nanny states also?

Somebody please look up "socialism." It does not mean the advocacy of policies that affect the general welfare of all, nor even state sponsorship of some important areas like healthcare or welfare, paid for by general taxation.
Some people aren't willing to let pesky facts muddle up their narrative.

The corroding of individual freedom.
What about speed limits and DUI laws? Neighborhood sound ordinances?

Besides, you've supported the party that has opposed LGBT rights, reproductive rights, cannabis legalization, etc. so no one here believes that you really care about individual freedom.

There should be a ban on people texting while crossing the road at least.

The corroding of individual freedom.

That is more important than saving lives?

I have seen 2 people, one killed, one suffering life changing injuries from not being aware of traffic because they were busy texting their besties with important stuff like "where are you now?"

So i would call caring about individual freedom of something so petty to be rather selfish.

That said, i am a socialist and liberal, i care about people

Like I said there's already existing laws that can deal with it. Do you think for a minute that people will comply with it anyways? It's put there , so it can be 'expanded' at a later time and making a convenient mechanism for a crackdown* by police that can also be regarded as a money grab whenever it is needed and further increasing governmental control over people's choices and individual Freedom's.

*Being mugged by law enforcement for Cold Hard Cash.

They complied with the law on driving while using a mobile. I see little difference.

Ahh so saving lives is down to a police money grab. Got ya.

Voice to text. It exists. Anyways people don't comply as much as you think.

You simply can't legislate stupid.

Besides I'll reiterate that there are already existing laws to address those things.

Yet people still use the keyboard, i wonder why? Could it be they are concentrating on correcting the voice to text errors?

Considering that prior to legislation and after legislation the number of deaths attributed to use of mobile phone while driving has reduced dramatically i see the law has made a difference.

So you are saying everyone using a mobile phone while walking is stupid?

And do those laws work. A dedicated law will remove much of the fog

Are you guys just in favor of making stupidity illegal? I mean heck some days I actually agree, but still. Making it illegal to text and walk is rather extreme. What's next, making it illegal to read and walk? Check your phone and walk? Inspect your ice cream cone and walk? There are millions of ways people can get distracted while walking. Do you really want to make all of them illegal? What would the punishment be? Community service? Probation? Jail time? Cone of shame?
Some laws are more advisory laws with no penalty attached unless there is an actual accident that may hurt someone else.

"Jaywalking" is an example that many communities have as law, and I jaywalk a lot because I walk a minimum of 2-3 miles daily, and yet I have never received a ticket.

Which existing laws deal with texting while crossing the street?
