Originally I came just to be a representative of my faith, as few in my faith do this sort of thing. I tried to clear up some misconceptions, with little luck.
That too was my intention. In practice many people here suffer from the "invincible ignorance fallacy" in an incurable form!

I now view it as a stage. Shift seems to take something dramatic, or a ton of time. My once fundamentalist dentist shifted because his son was obviously gay. So the choice was to hate your own kid, or love him. He close love, fortunately for his son.

Well, I've been looking back on the content over the 5 years since I joined, and it's certainly gone downhill. The polytheists mostly seem to have gone home. The Hindus still flourish and I used to have interesting conversations in that area until a stricter interpretation of the DIR rules — or perhaps complaints from a certain USian who joined the DIR? — lead to my exclusion.

I can't trace the proportions of different types of members, but I can check out the moderators:
Pagan: 3
Hindu: 7
Abrahamic: 7
Atheist, agnostic, concealed beliefs, silly designations: 16
I think that sums up the forum: a far cry from the original policy declaration!

So, I shall cease wasting my time here. My thanks to all the nice people like St Frankenstein, Aupmanyav, Vinayaka, and Jainarayan. Good riddance to all those I've had to put on ignore, and to those I'm not allowed to — you know who you are :p

Well, I'm sorry to see you go before really having many conversations with you, but I can understand why you are choosing to.
I may eventually go that route as well. I wish you all the best!

I'm here because I'm compelled by my responsibility to enrich & embiggen others.
Such selfless magnanimity! Personally I'm quite embiggened enough at this stage but how does the enriching thing work - do I need a PayPal account or can you just send a check?

To the OP question - I'm here because apart from spending a lot of time arguing with myself (which I always lose anyway) - I feel the need to argue with other people now and again about things that are of little consequence in the real world - hence my choice of RF. More seriously - I am just interested in what makes people of different beliefs (or non-beliefs) tick - how they figure out what to believe and what not...and whatnot.

No, I don't mean why do you exist, but why you are on this forum. A count of the 20 most recent posts showed
7 politics
6 Christianity
3 general religion
2 jokes
1 science
1 incomprehensible
Not quite a religious forum! Those who are not Christians, atheists, or Bahai seem to be very quiet: perhaps a lot have just given up and gone home! So, why are you here?

The forums are mental exercise. I think I'm a slightly sharper person when I debate with people, especially when considering that in real life conversations, I can't ponder on responses for 15 minutes, before making a reply. This allows me to become faster in real life.

...Ultimately, I find forums to be good for mental health, as well as increasing intelligence.

Also, I've learned a lot from forums, due to the fact that I can target specific points within any given topic and get real life answers to them almost instantly.

...This is much better than driving to the library and searching for a book that might not exist, and It's better than googling, because sometimes you can't find certain answers to certain questions.

Essentially, we are all in control regarding what direction we want to go... We're not stuck being fed what is offered such as with television, libraries, neespapers, top searches, etc.

Heck, even being asked specific questions, such as with this very thread, has caused me to become more aware!

I actually just taught myself something through the help of the OP, as I would have not otherwise considered the things I just thought had I not just written it down!

...There's something to be said about writing... It just puts a 'stamp' on our thoughts if that makes any sense.

Having had a year out, I'll give it another try. I've been visiting reddit, where the posters are a bit dim at times but the moderators come down like a ton of bricks on rudeness or attempts at conversion — a lot of people here I could name would be banned there!
