Religious rules on food - do you follow them?

The cow industry in the modern world mistreats dairy cows and keeps them on the path to eventual meat slaughter too. By consuming dairy you are part of the system.

That is, indeed, a fair analysis, but there are humane dairies out there from which one can purchase dairy products.

The dietary rules of polytheism are (as they say in China) to eat anything with legs that's not a table and anything with wings that's not an aeroplane.

Obviously I pay attention to animal care: free-range only, preferably organic.

Whenever my husband goes grocery shopping, I remind him that when he buys dairy products, he's got to check to make sure they're from "happy cows." :)

I have allergic reactions if I don't follow the dietary restrictions of my religion, so I have to. However, today, I didn't remove all the fat from my steak, and I'm feeling sick and have a little headache. I follow Kosher.

Do you follow the rules on diet according to your religion?

If you like, describe the rules and how you follow them.
Yes, I do. As a Bahai I do not drink Alchohalic drinks, or smoke anything as there are forbidden.
I also eat more veggetarian than meat, as this is more suitable diet for human based on Bahai writings, although it is not forbidden to eat meat, even pork is not forbidden in Bahai scriptures.

While I'm not a drinker, I try to break the precept against alcohol (a little kahlua in my coffee) every once in a while to remind myself not to get tripped up over the little things. If I've noticed I've gone 3 months without breaking the precept, I'll look for an excuse to do so. (I am left-hand path, but I naturally follow the precept without having to think about it. I guess the key to breaking the precept is to maintain mindfulness. I never drink enough to become impaired or heedless.)

I follow Hindu vegetarianism to reduce needless animal suffering and killing. Although today. 'veganism' (eliminating dairy) would be even better.
Sure, elminate dairy, sell the cows to the dogfood fsctory.

How do you get food from pasture land, if not via cows??
Goats?

How do Mormons deal with those with genetic issues like diabetes where you need sugar at times?

We do what the doctors tell us.

Er, I have to ask; where did that question come from? Trust me on this one; Mormons like sugar. And chocolate. Mind you, I drink diet coke, but that has nothing to do with any religious prohibition against sugar. However, you have me curious now. What do you think we eat or don't eat?

Much of our food, animal or plant, also comes from cheap exploited labour, whether it be Indian shudras, Chinese peasants, California illegal immigrants, or Panama banana plantation workers. Much of it is inorganic, grown with a ton of pesticides also. So other than some kind of backyard organic gardening, we're SOL on the being totally ethical.

I just look at minimizing it some.

One could switch the golf courses over to there I suppose. Much of the beef isn't from pasture, but from feedlots. Yes, it's complicated.

Beef in America is raised on pastureland.
Fattened in feedlots, to get that cholesterol up.

There are millions of acres of padture. Many
millions.

A lot of food production. Some of it cannot be farmed
at all.

Farming is far far more environmentally destructive than
grazing.
