Who Said That Porn Isn't Harmful?

Detective Vernon Allan Richardson killed himself on Tuesday:

Pastor Ricky Baldwin of Riverstone Community Church in Jacksonville, told CBS 47 that he didn’t know Richardson, 56, was under investigation for child pornography until his suicide. Richardson had been with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office for 17 years and served as Riverstone’s children’s pastor for eight years.

“Never in a million years would you ever thought that was possible. That’s why it’s so hard to believe now,” Baldwin said.

That’s the terrifying thing about predators: Their deviance isn’t always obvious. They seem like nice, normal people… until they’re not. And part of how they fit right in to a community is often by becoming a member of a local church.

The pastor’s computer was seized and two images classified as child pornography were found, police said. One was of a nude boy 7 to 9, the other of a nude girl about the same age.

Richardson was found dead before authorities were able to arrest him.

It’s not clear who those children are or how he obtained the images. But this story is a reminder that someone’s reputation — and even that person’s standing in a church community — doesn’t make him incapable of disgraceful and despicable acts. In fact, sometimes, that standing provides them cover to continue their abhorrent acts.

Anybody. Anywhere. Pastor was surprised? Why would anybody be surprised? Don't they ever read the news?

Yea, it is written in the Book of Cyril...
2 images? Not wishing in any way to diminish the crime of child pornography, but that sounds unusual. Usually when people are busted for child exploitation material there's hundreds or even thousands of images. Having heard horror stories about some of the inappropriate charges of child porn of people taking photos of their own kids in the bath, and even kids taking photos of themselves, I really hope this isn't something like that.

If he's guilty of posessing what most reasonable people would think of as child porn, hey, throw the book at him, don't get me wrong.

I skimmed and missed that at first. Of course this is early in the investigation. This was the church computer. There may be much more on his private home one. We may never know. Suicide over perhaps only two images does not appear to make any sense. Suicide over an investigation that would uncover guilt is understandable.

Your thread title mentions only porn, it fails to mention child porn, which anybody in his right mind knows is harmful to children exposed to being sexually exploited.

I've posted the below video of former adult porn star Andrea Marie Truden ( aka Andrea True ) for our viewing pleasure.

There is a group on facebook which tracks this kind of thing and posts examples. Its a serious issue with churches that have youth pastors.

Skwim, since you try to keep up on this sort of thing you want to look on a FB page called Church Folk Revolution. They report a lot of this kind of crud that people don't like to talk about. Specifically they try to report on wayward youth pastors and pastors who break the law.

To those who read the article it should obvious the harm in question is to the consumer, not the participants.

I don't really keep track of it at all. The things just pop up amid all other kinds of news pieces. But hey, when you find an interesting piece or two, please share.

I'm not making a claim either way, I'm just making an observation. If we are going to talk about what makes sense, having any images at all on the church computer wouldn't seem to make any sense, either. But hey. It's all a bit academic at this point.

I understand the catchy click baity title. But no one claims child porn isn’t harmful, therefore negating the snarky thread title somewhat.
If it was a sarcastic, “child porn drives pastor to suicide” (or whatever) it would make a little more sense in context.
