Vipassana meditation

Spirit of Light

Be who ever you want
Concentration on what? Yeah, with concentrated thinking one gets better insight. Don't worry, I am not down-playing Vipassana since Lord Buddha is my guru.

In my experience some use a candle light to focus on and concentrate on before they close their eyes, then they concentrate on keeping the flame as bright as if they have open eyes, that is ofcourse only one tiny part of Samadhi meditation.

Vipassana or insight meditation is meditation that open you up to see things as they trully are, the insight how we get "rid" of mental impurities and how to calm the mind so we no longer get attached to human emotions like happiness, sorrow, pain, greed, anger and so on. As a buddhist seeing it for what it is, is to live in the moment and knowing that everything has a beginning and an ending. so we should not attach to it and feel sad, happy greed and so on.

No matter the situation one should remain calm. but ofcourse only those who have master the vipassana meditation can stay calm no matter what happens.

This was a very short introduction, but actually there is so many small parts that one need to work on every day to gain the inner wisdom needed to gain very good effect from the meditation.

Im practicing Zen still a beginner but think that that is my goal ultimately and will ultimately be less addicted to stuff.

As I understand it, a couple of different kinds of samadhi meditation. The kind you are describing is deliberative, in which one concentrates on a physical object. The other is reflective, in which one concentrates on a subtle object, such as breath, the five senses, the sense being (I am), Sankalpa, etc.

I learned to meditate practicing the former. I now almost exclusively practice the latter.

I've always felt breaths would be the best place to start. It is. You come and count and count and start over every time you screw up , and then eventually one day you don't need to count anymore. Mastered Focus.

That's when you let go of the branch and free fall into the Big Pond. Focused, but not on anything any more. Then the damn Branch comes around and you instinctively grab it again and it's back to breaths.

Yes, I'll practice Vipassana on occasion, among other types of meditation. However, I keep coming back to Zazen. Zazen is helpful to keep you from habitually slipping into other forms of meditation.

It so strange for me right now. In the past I have never had to pay attention to breath or breathing. I was just like a little minnow that joined the pack and carried on swimming. BUT.... (pun intended) since I had smoked for so long, now I am having to pay attention to breath as my breathing has become unnaturally shallow (after 30 years of smoking). So, what goes around, comes around, I suppose. It's all part of retraining. *sigh* DAY 26! This breathing deep breaths is so cool!

Who knew "the master" would have to re-enroll in Breathing 101 :D:D

It is a very good post you have here :) Meditation is not about a goal, it is about getting free from all the bound of the world, and only exist in the moment :) being consious of every moment that happens but not cling to past or worry about future, all there is, is right now.

Are there others here who practice Vipassana meditation ?

Yeah, I practice it along with other meditation techniques to get to a mindful state.

It is easier in the beginning to be aware of one's sensations rather than thoughts and emotions. There is a sweet thrill of relaxation when each tense sensation, after being observed calmly, dissolves into nothingness.

In my experiance there are more happening to a new person in meditation then for us who have many years experience :) the tiny changes that arise when in deep meditation where there are close to nothingness is bearly something we can notice :)
