A New Commandment

jesus gave his apostles a new commandment; which was to love all as he did.

is that a commandment to love unconditionally?

A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

did Jesus love the behavior of the "money changers"?

maybe Jesus didn't love the sin?

... is that a commandment to love unconditionally?

My opinion: the commandment would be to love each other unconditionally, but not to love/nurture each other's behavior unconditionally.

love can go too far if it nurtures bad behavior.

usury isn't loving and the ot shows no advocation for businesses to be practicing near the temple. the tithe that abraham gave to melchizedek was for charity; which is love of those who are in need. neither asked the other for anything.

Different types of giving

The well known Hindu text the Bhagavadgita speaks of three types of giving:

  • A gift that is given without any expectation of appreciation or reward is beneficial to both giver and recipient.
  • A gift that is given reluctantly and with the expectation of some advantage is harmful to both giver and recipient.
  • A gift that is given without any regard for the feelings of the recipient and at the wrong time, so causing embarrassment to the recipient, is again harmful to both giver and recipient.
    (Bhagavadgita 17.20-22)

love can go too far if it nurtures bad behavior.

example: a parent welcoming their child (who is a rapist or a murderer) into their home and hiding them indefinitely, unconditionally from the police.

thoughts?

Leviticus 19:18 says: Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the Lord.

I don't see how loving each other altruistically is a new commandments. Loving your neighbor as yourself is part of the Torah.

the golden rule is used by most all organized religions, humanists, and atheists. fashion never goes out of style, it just gets rebranded. the younger generations want to appear hip and so language, hair styles, clothing, homes, et al get change. same actions different forms.

Thank you so much for this.

Unconditional Love = Dana ? ( less specific, sometimes good sometimes bad )
"love all as he did" = Grace = Sattvikam ? ( more specific, always good )
Harboring the Murderer/Rapist = Tamas ? ( more specific, always bad)

love never allows harm.
it may harbor, shelter someone from being harmed, or control, shelter them from doing harm to others. this is why they are placed under control because they have lost control of self and are harming others, or allowing others to harm them.

loss of self control isn't love.

unhealthy fear generally results in loss of control because one is reacting to something that isn't necessarily real. genuine threats of harm are defensible because love for self and self-preservation are healthy.

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.

Will to love
I would agree that this means we are to love unconditionally. I also like how you answered the post about hiding your child if they are a criminal. Love means wanting, and making efforts toward, the best for others. The problem is of course that in relationships it is sometimes difficult to work through the shades of grey where it seems like what is best for one person causes harm to another. Nevertheless, we are commanded (instructed) to do the best we can.

Some good rules of thumb, to me, are that love is not necessarily warm fuzzy feelings or devotion, but love is feeding, healing, teaching, nurturing, listening.
