Some believe silence to be a necessary part of a healthy being, why? the quakers practice it. transcendentalism, buddhism, hinduism, even Isaac is mentioned as meditating when he first met rebekah. elijah was told to be still and know god. christian monks and nuns in their communities often practiced it. even muhammed is reported to have practiced it in the cave of hira. So what might be the significance in such an act?

Silence, Pythagoras believed, was very important. Staying quiet was a way to learn self-control, and so he made sure that anyone who wanted to join his cult could do it. Anyone who signed up had to close his mouth and keep it shut for five years straight.

Ahhh..Silence! my true and loyal best friend!
It never lies to me,
It always tells me the truth,
It doesn’t talk to me,
It speaks to me,
It is a Peace!
Of mined!
Only thing that kills it!
It (Is) no(is)e!

I don't think theres anything I can add that hasn't been said already...these two nailed it:
If you are not silent, the voice of the Divine can't be fully heard.

A silent mind open the awareness of mind to the unseen or unheard when mind has not been silenced. when mind is silent even the smallest changes around us can be noticed.
But yes silence...It's amazing what can be found in it, what the Spirit can show in the quiet....

I think everyone has different gifts and different obstacles. I like lots and lots of alone time. I'm a natural deep thinker. The thought of going to a dance party with everyone accidentally touching each other, and you can't hear each other talk because of the noise, sounds like hell to me. I find waking up at 3 AM in the dark and listening to the rain to be wonderfully soothing.

But I'm in the minority. I know how it feels to be left out because I'm different. So I'm very reluctant to say that there is something wrong or bad about people who can't tolerate silence. Not everyone is supposed to be a monk or a spiritually enlightened leader. They simply bring a different set of gifts to the table. They can do things I can't. They can raise money at a fundraiser where I would be lost. They can schmooze the newcomer where I'm tongue tied. They might play the organ or sing in the choir. They might shoot hoops with the youth. Maybe they run the carnival on Purim. Maybe (God save us!) they run the finances. LOL

It takes all kinds of people to make the world go 'round.

without silence, or the ability to listen to one's own inner voice, one can't understand. they just tend to parrot. understanding comes from within. knowledge comes from outside. i can read spanish and even speak it quite well because I know how to pronounce the words but unfortunately I don't understand most of it.

tú entiendes?
