The Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground (body), and breathed into his nostrils the breath (spirit) of life; and man became a living soul (soul)". Genesis 2:7. It is not said that man became spirit and soul; but rather, that God inbreathed spirit, and man became a living soul.

I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ." (1 Thessalonians 5:23)

In genesis 2:7 it says we don't have a soul. But in 1 thessalonians 5:23 it says we do.

Why the confusion?

I still don't know if i believe in soul sleep yet. That's why i go back in forth.
I think the related question remains do you believe the Bible is without contradiction?
Also imo Genesis 2:7 doesn't say we don't have a soul, it says we are a soul, this is because it refers to the essential aspect of man for consideration.

What is soul to you? Is it separate from your personality, your body or something else?

This may help....

Especially note paragraphs 9 & 10:

The Soul According to the Bible — Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY

Take care.

Interesting thought. I think what was shared by someone else questioning whether or not we believe the Bible is without contradictions. If that is the foundation of our beliefs (a book without contradictions?) then we are putting our faith in the wrong place.

If we have our faith rooted in Jesus, not only His name but everything He stood for (i.e., the teachings He brought to this world), then these little gnats that come along and shake people's faith, won't be given a second thought in our minds. We will be able to quickly see the lie in what is being shared, and bring our focus back on the light of what Jesus brought to this world.

When our faith in on something that is living, then it will give us the tools we need as each situation arises.

Our God is a living God... It's high time we start seeing Him as such.

In peace

I don't know what soul sleep is, but that's not important. Here is some information on the soul and spirit.

The Soul

“There is no dichotomy [division] of body and soul in the O[ld] T[estament]. The Israelite saw things concretely, in their totality, and thus he considered men as persons and not as composites. The term nepeš [ne′phesh], though translated by our word soul, never means soul as distinct from the body or the individual person. . . . The term [psy·khe′] is the N[ew] T[estament] word corresponding with nepeš. It can mean the principle of life, life itself, or the living being.”—New Catholic Encyclopedia (1967), Vol. XIII, pp. 449, 450.

“The Hebrew term for ‘soul’ (nefesh, that which breathes) was used by Moses . . . , signifying an ‘animated being’ and applicable equally to nonhuman beings. . . . New Testament usage of psychē (‘soul’) was comparable to nefesh.”—The New Encyclopædia Britannica (1976), Macropædia, Vol. 15, p. 152.

“The belief that the soul continues its existence after the dissolution of the body is a matter of philosophical or theological speculation rather than of simple faith, and is accordingly nowhere expressly taught in Holy Scripture.”—The Jewish Encyclopedia (1910), Vol. VI, p. 564.

The Spirit

"The Hebrew word ru′ach and the Greek pneu′ma, which are often translated “spirit,” have a number of meanings. All of them refer to that which is invisible to human sight and which gives evidence of force in motion. The Hebrew and Greek words are used with reference to (1) wind, (2) the active life-force in earthly creatures, (3) the impelling force that issues from a person’s figurative heart and that causes him to say and do things in a certain way, (4) inspired utterances originating with an invisible source, (5) spirit persons, and (6) God’s active force, or holy spirit." - Reasoning from the scriptures, Watchtower Bible & Tract Society (1985) (Link)

In fact, that last book is linked to, you can read it online free, it will be very useful if your quest for accurate knowledge is genuine.

Once again, this problem arises because you are trying to conflate chr-stian beliefs with the Jewish Scriptures. You might as well be trying to mix oil with water, Judaism and chr-stianity couldn’t possibly be any further apart or opposite from one another.

Jews do not believe in anything believed in or taught by chr-stianity. The Hebrew Bible does not teach anything even remotely similar to anything that chr-stianity believes in and teaches; and in fact forbids most chr-stian practices and beliefs.

If you are confused about so many things because it seems to you that the Hebrew Scriptures are saying the opposite of what the chr-stian writings say, and what is taught by chr-stianity; there is no need to be confused, because that is exactly what is happening.
