Having had JWs as schoolmates, associates etc I can see how that was a problem. Only on the internet have I learned that there are JWs that are more moderate. My country's JW have a bad reputation at the moment though it probably doesn't bother them.

They are used to it. If it prevents them from congregating and proselytizing then it bothers them and they will most likely do something about it. Then again, if it's costing them, from the Society's or leaders point of view, it would most certainly bother them.

They may consider it an honor. Acts of the Apostles 5:41-42

Right. I think the events and publicity here cost them some members as the leadership wasn't completely following the ideals instead having a hidden luxury getaway. But what leadership ever has? The rest could just be chalked up to them following their faith and even if it caused anguish for some, they will have the right of it as they can quote the Bible in their defense.

For many years I used to go over the limits and ignored it as well. Both in an ascetic and in a somewhat hedonistic sense by not having it follow it's nature. The right balance is being one with your body without vanity or excessive desire, in my opinion.

In a philosophical mindset you shouldn't have too much care for it, but for practical purposes you should treat it like a professional tool you can't afford to lose. People who don't maintain it tend to pay extra later on...

Don't get me wrong. I don't ignore it and don't disregard care and maintenance.

I think of it more as a car. I wash it, wax it, change the oil, rotate the tires, and perform all of the required maintenance. But I realize the the car's serviceability is finite, therefore, my attachment to it is limited.

I have nothing much in the way of things that I could not replace.
However I would value my memories more than anything else.

I've never completely understood the "Buddhist" idea of categorical non-attachment I guess. I think some level of attachment to things is healthy.

At least going this far in non-attachment doesn't seem my cup of tea ... Buddhist monk was attacked

Do you consider that you might have a new car in the future or is this the only one? That changes a lot of things.

Perhaps, but then again, maybe this monk had an understanding unbeknownst to us.

I have in the past, yes. But my shift in understanding hasn't really changed the way I behave. I'm still the same insufferable jerk that I always was. :D
