It's really irritating how people start talking in Sanskrit while using English in the same sentence. I even think that they themselves are just copy and pasting those words and don't know what they really mean. Else they would translate them and us English words.

Imagine if half of the words in used in my last paragraph were from a foreign language that you don't know XD..

I wouldn't say that I hate any religions, but I think that the most harm is typically associated with the majority religion in a place, whatever it is.

There's something about getting into that position of power that changes the character of a religion; at that point, the specifics of the religion tend not to matter much.

Pretty much any religion can play nicely with others when it's a minority religion in a position of weakness, but when a religion -apparently any religion, AFAICT - gets a fair bit of power, they end up using it to oppress people.

While that is often the case, there are many cases of minority creeds causing a lot of harm. Out of the top of my head, there are Scientology, Westboro, Aum Shinrikyo, Kardecism, the Rajneeshees.

Then again, I am not sure of what you qualifies as a place for the purposes of your statement. Would a closed community of believers count? Or maybe an ethnical neighborhood?

I roughly agree, but I also think that the exceptions are very enlightening and significant.

Come to think of it, I also wonder if there is such a thing as a non-Abrahamic religion in a position of power. There probably are, but I am blanking on any examples right now.

Have you seen the scenes about religion in Finland in the documentary "The Norden"? What do you think of them?

Hate is an entirely unproductive use of energy.

However, I find any religion that teaches intolerance and proselytization objectionable.

Salixlncendium,
Does what you say mean that you find Jesus objectionable, because that is what he did every day, and taught all his followers to proselytize. Christianity was taught as The Way, the only way to Salvation, Acts 4:8-13. If anyone loved his neighbor, he would want to tell him about the way to everlasting life, 2Timothy 4:2-5. It is the same today, but even more vital today, because Jesus will return to earth shortly, and that will be to Judge the World as to who are following The Way, taught in the first century, Acts 9:2, 19:9,23, 26:28, 1Peter 4:16.
Love for neighbor compels one to speak about the truth to his friends and neighbors. This is some of the last commands Jesus made before he returned to heaven, Matthew 28:19,20, Acts 1:8.
Telling about the Way is the very way of Christianity, 2Timothy 2:1,2, 1Corinthians 9:16-27. Agape!!!

Whichever one calls or knocks on my door when I'm in the shower. Yeah, it's actually happened.

David,
Yes, that could be annoying, but have you ever thought about the trouble they went through to come to your door, as some do regularly. They spend their own money for the Literature they give to interested ones, dress clothes, spend their own money for gas, and tires, and wear out their cars to visit you with a lifesaving message from God our Creator and Lifegiver. They could be out enjoying themselves in countless other endeavors, or working to make some money to make life easier, as very few people who come to your door are wealthy. Also, since most people are not interested in spiritual things, why do you think they came to your door, when many people do not even stop to think. Other religions have tried this work, because it is the most effective way to help others, but they cannot take being rebuffed, so they quit after a short time. These are at your door because they love you, and want you to live, with them, in the Paradise earth that God has promised. Even if you do not appreciate them The Almighty God, Who will shortly Judge this world, Does. Agape!!!

I think you're assuming that I am taking a jab at Jehovah's witnesses. I assure you I am not. I have no problem with them at all. My post was a rather light hearted attempt at humor. Where I live there is just as much chance of a Baptist knocking at my door as a JW.

I get that it's a rotten deal for the proselytizers, too, but if you come to my door preaching beliefs that hurt vulnerable people, you won't get a warm reception... no matter how much you're out of pocket.

Sacrifice for a noble cause is praiseworthy; sacrifice to perpetuate injustice is not.

What's the harm in Jehovah's Witnesses?

9-10ths_Penguin,
When you hear one side of something, it seems that they are right, but maybe not, when you hear the other side. Anything that happens is blown up greatly, if you do not like the people that are charged. Most of the things you hear are wrong or greatly exagerated!!
When you have a large organization, it is impossible for there not to be some perverts, pedophiles, or any other aberration.
I watched a show few nights ago, on A&E, and I was really surprised at just how much things seem wrong, when only one side is presented. One real problem is having someone accuse an Elder in a Christian Congregation, and knowing exactly what the best thing to do is. First, an Elder Has been proven to be trustworthy over many years, so you don’t want to destroy his reputation, if the accusation is not true. You investigate, but how can you prove the action when each tells a different story??
The Bible tells us that there must be two or three witnesses to decide any serious accusation against a Christian, Deuteronomy 19:15, Hebrews 10:28. Many times it is impossible to determine who is lying, unless there is some evidence.
I believe that JW’s take the two or three witnesses to be two or three witness added, in case there is more than one case. Otherwise, what, exactly, can be done?? You know girls today are very wise beyond their years, and are cruel enough to make trouble for someone if they think they have not treated them right. Also it is very hard, and wrong to destroy a loving, trusted, and proven Elder, Shepherd, when there is no certain way to prove a crime. Would you be happy if that was done to you or your Father, without proof??? Witnesses try hard, but sometimes it is impossible to know who is at fault!!!
One other point to think about, The Bible says that the true religion will be hated by all nations, Matthew 24:9. Jesus said that the second greatest Commandment is to love your neighbor as yourself. They just have that lifesaving message, that Jesus said to teach,in all the world, Matthew 28,19,20.

When you quote a spiritual text, it is better to use the original quote and then you can do the explaining in English (or any other language you're writing in).
Apart from that, in spiritual philosophy many Sanskrit words do not have an accurate synonym in English, so it would be wrong to use English words in those cases.

But I know the feeling, I sometimes feel the same irritation with Greek words popping up in an English text about the New Testament.

Most of what I object to about the JWs I confirmed with actual JWs.

When you have a large organization, it is impossible for there not to be some perverts, pedophiles, or any other aberration.
To an extent... organizations can have policies to protect youth and reduce the risk of abuse occurring in the first place, but I agree that we can never reduce that risk to zero.

Responsible, ethical organizations take steps to protect the children in their care and, if abuse happens despite these steps, they respond immediately and appropriately.

Part of any appropriate response is immediately reporting any allegations of abuse of a child to the police.

So just keep that in mind: when organizations get criticized in sex abuse scandals, they aren't making an issue out of the mere fact that the organization includes people who might want to abuse children; they're making an issue of the organization's own acts that may have enabled predators, magnified their harm, or made their victims suffer further.

You don't. As soon as you hear even an allegation of abuse, you go to the police. Any church discipline proceedings you might have don't take the place of a real criminal investigation.

The Bible tells us that there must be two or three witnesses to decide any serious accusation against a Christian, Deuteronomy 19:15, Hebrews 10:28.
I don't care what the Bible says. Your responsibility doesn't change just because you interpret your scriptures to tell you to behave irresponsibly.

If your organization's rules don't allow it to take proper measures to protect the safety of children in its care, then the organization must never put itself in the position of having children in its care.

However, if it decides to have care of children regardless, then it doesn't get any special exemptions from having to meet a normal, reasonable, responsible standard of care.

Many times it is impossible to determine who is lying, unless there is some evidence.

Again: this is an issue for the police to sort out, not you. You don't get to unilaterally decide not to even tell the police about the allegation.

IOW, "I don't need to worry that criticism of my church is valid, because criticism is a sign that my church is right!"

This is a cop-out. It's irresponsible to just brush off abuse allegations and not even entertain the possibility that the reason people are saying your church has an abuse problem is because it might just have an abuse problem.

BTW: you never touched on the other major harm of the JWs that those links talked about: refusing blood transfusions. Even if your church fixed its child predator problem, your proselytizers won't be welcome at my door as long as you teach parents to kill their kids by denying them life-saving medical treatment. That's pretty evil all by itself.
