Does anybody know about who were Pandavas in their earlier birth? What did they do to get so much pain?

I do not know their past births except Arjuna, who was Nara with Narayana. Also, despite their anguish, i think they were blessed considering they appeared during the lifetime of Lord Krishna and were intimate friends with him :)

External pain due to privations, hardship and poverty serve the same purpose as austerities. It purifies the soul and develops the character.

This strength of character gained is the reason why the likes of the Pandavas and low-born Vidura were able to recognize Krishna as an Avatar while the others could not.

As Patton himself stated, " Pressure creates diamonds."

Imho, this thread belongs to the general Hinduism forums, and should be transfered there, so as not to dilute the vedanta/philosophy forums with mundane topics. This would defeat the purpose for which the philosophy forums were created.
