What's your greatest sin?

Michel has reminded me of a very serious sin this week. One that I have known about all my life but one that needs to be constantly encouraged and supported. It is a sin to posess an ability or a talent that we are not exercising or bringing to satisfaction. That ability could be anything that can be shared or given as a gift to possibly better our own life or someone else’s.

I'd say my biggest fault is that I ignore my problems too often. I'd rather laugh something off than address it. I have a lot of the same problems as everyone else, ie. drinking, smoking, bills, etc. I just avoid dealing with them. I also like to blow smoke up peoples' rear ends to avoid confrontation or sugarcoat the situation with an excuse.

When I was Christian, it was masturbating.

Now it's just wishing harm upon others, especially customers that throw me a 100 dollar bill for a 94 cent cup of coffee and then complain when they get 5's and 1's back in change.

among the greatest sins in my faith is the sin of forgetfulness- forgeting to pray, forgeting to be mindful, forgeting to acknolege others. when we forget, we can not see clearly or lovingly who and what is in front of us.

i do alot of forgetting, obviously. especially when i'm in a lousy mood or discouraged.

That reminds me of something someone told me once. He said he got these pills to help him remember things, but he always kept forgetting to take the pills.

reminds me of this joke:

guy's sitting in his doctor's office, and the doctor comes back in with some charts.

"sir, i'm afriad i have some bad news" says the doctor. "two things, actually".

"oh, no. what?" asks the man.

"well, it looks like you have a pretty advanced stage of cancer, sir. i'm very sorry."

"oh, god! oh, no! so what else is wrong?"

"your CAT scan is back, and we're seeing an awful lot of brain plaque- likely early-onset alzeimers. again, i'm very sorry." says the doctor.

the man sits for a few moments, taking this all in and then says brightly "well, at least i don't have cancer!"

For me, I don't particularly think I consistently do anything wrong. I don't think drinking is a bad thing unless it gets in the way of your personal life. And I don't ever really get drunk. I know a lot of things I do are considered sins by a lot of religions, but I don't particularly follow any of them. But that doesn't make me a bad person, does it?

Mine is drinking. It's just so engrained in Bosnian culture - we have a shot of vodka with every meal...
It's so funny that you should mention drinking! I've actually invented a drinking game...scan the latest RF posts and take a shot everytime Djamila mentions the word "Bosnia".

That's cute!

(Djamila, I do adore you. I mean no offense)

Or we could take a shot every time I use these... (...)

I'm confused. I always thought that alcohol was forbidden by Islam -- or is that just for all of Islam outside of Bosnia? :D

If I thought it was okay, I wouldn't have chosen it as my sin. ;)

What is, in your opinion, your greatest common sin? Something you know is wrong according to the teachings of your faith, but you consistently choose to go ahead and bite and bullet - whether its consciously or not?
In reading this thread it seems to me that yall have a very different idea of sin than I do. Gracie's was the only one that I could really relate to. Drinking? Swearing? Masturbating? Who cares?! These are your greatest sins? Honestly? My greatest common sin is that I constantly am not as generous or kind or gracious or thankful or considerate as I could be.

If someone sits with me
And we talk about the Beloved,
If I cannot give his heart comfort,
If I cannot make him feel better
About himself and this world,
Then, Hafiz,
Quickly run to the mosque and pray--
For you have just committed
The only sin I know.

Albert Einstien:

A human being is a part of the whole, called by us the 'Universe', a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separate from the rest - a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely, but the striving for such achievement is in itself a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security.

My greatest sin might be the times I withdraw into myself. But I'm not exactly sure what a sin is, so I'm going here by Albert's notion of what we should be doing with our affections.

I think most people view sin as something done on purpose, willfully. Of course the majority of us realize we could do better in the being gracious department. As I read through this thread I can add each and every sin confessed by others to my list. There really is no new sin under the sun. Who has authority to define which is the greatest sin?

Edit: I owe you frubals for posting the prayer/poem. 'Tis a good one. :)

This week I am trying to lose weight---so today my greatest sin is gluttony. Yesterday I had a ton of things I needed to get done--and didn't do any of them--so I would say yesterday it was sloth.

Anger definately.

Its something I hate about myself...the dark side of the force is strong in me despite my idealistic rhetoric on peace and love.

I have been thinking about this a lot today after reading this thread this morning and I thought of a lot of things that I have done that are sinful. A lot of it boiled down to I should have told person X, I did this. I think my biggest sin is dishonesty. Not lying but dishonesty, I am very bad about not telling people around me the truth not because what I tell them isn't true but because I don't tell them anything. I think that not telling someone something they should know is just as bad as telling them a lie.

This really didn't come out at all like I meant for it too, it made more sense in my head.
