Less than 20 years is my guess. It is all driven by excessive political forces on both sides. It is doubtful to me that Bipartisanship can make a comeback.

bipartisanship used to mean 'let the best man win', and the loser would support the winner, the winner having won due to his being in a superior position morally and intellectually. we inherited this idea from the Greeks, by which the wiser debater won out via logical argumentation, the loser shown the light by the winner. but it appears that something has changed , and that is that the argument itself has become the goal, except that the logic has become defiled to mean that the one who puts his opponent down the best is the best man, and the public seems to be eating it up. we have lost something quite precious as a nation. i am afraid it is gone, and bullying is the norm from top to bottom now. people now live in fear across the country in every city and town. this is what happens when a people think that materialism will bring them happiness. we have become a rich and powerful but shallow and aggressive people. but i believe we are going to face something quite unexpected during the Trump administration, that when he has no more cards to play to defend himself when exposed for his corrupt and criminal dealings, he will retaliate by imposing martial law as the final means of control. then there will be no more hope for the American Dream, if there really ever was. on another level, America is paying a national karmic debt for past offenses: slavery, land theft, and general corruption. who knows where it will lead.

That will be part of it. Intensely partisan tribal politics will be another.

Intensely tribal politics are what one can expect from rule by oligarchs. When the politicians are beholden only to their rich doners, they need not moderate their actions and rhetoric to appeal to a broad-based constituency. Instead, they can be just as partisan and radical as their oligarchic masters will allow them to be.

Lol . America's not going to fall. I'm pretty sure it will still be here when I retire.

At no time did the US support anything you just posted.

It's hard to predict how long it will take, but all countries and empires rise and fall at some point.

We've always had political divisions in this country, so none of this is particularly new. We've even survived a Civil War, and we will likely survive another one - although hopefully there won't be one.

Most of what I see happening now is infighting among the elite factions. They're not fighting over principles or disagreements over philosophy, since they all basically have the same views on politics and economics. It's just power politics analogous to Don Corleone vs. Don Barzini. In fact, I don't think there's been a time in US history where both parties were more alike than they are now. But they're just looking for excuses to fight - they and their wannabes and blind followers.

I think America itself will weather this storm, although with any luck, both major parties will engage in mutually assured destruction. If that happens, there's a likelihood that one or more third parties might fill the void, and we'll finally get some real reform in this country.

Not really, one side relies on division and propaganda.

It's easy to see where the problem is in this graph. When people rely on disinformation for 'news,' that's where the train starts going off the tracks. The result is millions of people paranoid, angry and fearful of everything. That's why propaganda is used. Propaganda is the cause. Social media has also spread this virus. Turn on Fox, all day long it's leftist this, leftist that, democrat this, etc. Lying to people on purpose trying to scare them and divide the parties.

Today the propaganda machine is telling vulnerable conservatives that a democratic vote is a vote to destroy America and turn it into Venezuela.

No one on the left or media outlet spends 24/7 demonizing conservatives.

Ha, the latest UN report on global warming states that the planet has less than 12 years left unless drastic measures are taken worldwide. We will all die with a whimper, pointing the finger at the other guy. The crucial difference between survival and devastation is only the difference between 1.5 and 2.0 degrees Celsius.

Not officially, but it was the attitude.

Hardly. You are stating a fiction. Look at Adams and Jackson joint government was a disaster as Adam, rightly, hated Jackson. Slavery, Civil War, Jim Crow. etc. Open to compromise at times but never accepting a political victory or policy was "winning a debate" and "conceding the point" Heck parties formed on the basis of not giving up a principle even when there was an argument against it with merit.

The same stuff has been claimed since the 90s. We should have been dead when 2k rolled around yet here we are.

Spot on, and that is exactly how Hitler gained leverage to capture the German people's mentality.

It's people like you who ignore the science that will kill us all.

Yeah, 'here we are', filled with chemicals and hormones, radioactivity and cancer, dying as we live.

Didn't see CNN there. Assuming it is a little liberal.

I'll likely be gone. I was working on a book idea where all the ice melted, and there were huge deserts back in the early 80's, so yeah.
