The problem is by no mean saying, "I don't believe in Satan" but saying, " I know for a fact that there is no Satan."

And we know for a fact that they cannot know what they claim to know for a fact. We understand the limits of knowledge on the matter even if they don't, whether they claim, "I know for a fact that there is no Satan" or the opposite one, right? It's like one saying that he knows for a fact that he will live beyond an age that he hasn't reached yet. No he doesn't.

And so we ignore such claims, or translate them into what they really mean - a person has taken a leap of faith and is confusing his own certitude with fact.

I answered 'no' based on the common definition of satan. My view is that there is no 'being' of that name but there is a principle of ignorance which in the East is called "Maya".

How is that a problem?

Personally, I find certainty claims on this field to be either strictly personal in meaning or just plain silly.

Arrogance would only be possible if expectations of other people supporting their views arose.

I made a thread about whether Satan is to blame for the evil of some politicians and in the poll most people voted, "I know for a fact there is no Satan."

That is some damned arrogance right there.

Is it any more arrogant that claiming that there absolutely IS a Satan?

I think it is stupidity. Stupidity is dangerous. It has many times nearly killed me. I am not ready to die - I think. So that way it is a problem. To me.
It is stupid to take a clearly symbolic concept too seriously, IMO.

And sure, that is dangerous too.

As a polytheist, I naturally take the reports of other polytheists as true unless obviously dubious. For that reason, I voted "I think so", since people who appear to be sane and rational have reported experiences of him. e.g.
Summary of my beliefs

Its not a problem. The problem is believing bronze age mythology is real and dumping that belief on the world as fact.

I know for a fact that exactly the same amount of evidence exists for the existence of satan as exists for the purple people eater.

I voted for define "Satan". So, could you describe what Satan means to you? Unless I missed it somewhere.

Satan is an angel of Gd, he tempts us, for without obstacles and temptations we would all become haughty and full of ourselves. Gd created both good and evil.

It is not any more "damned arrogance" than many theists who claim "I know for a fact there is a Satan", or who claim "I know for a fact there is a God"

How do you know that we don't know?

Hello .... You are missing the point here ... your point ... making the statement "My belief is a fact BUT beliefs of others are not a fact". There is a discrepancy

Hello .... You are still missing the point here ... your point ... making the statement "My belief is a fact BUT beliefs of others is not a fact". Still don't see the discrepancy?
I cannot see how they can prove God doesn't exist or satan doesn't exist. But I do see how we could know that God exists or satan exists. In other words just because I know something is true doesn't mean you know it.

Besides they always claim they have no beliefs. So if they believe God doesn't exist then that's a belief.

For the belief that something exists the null hypothesis, or ground state so to speak, is a lack of belief. Do you demand that people prove that bigfoot does not exist? Or that fairies and leprechauns do not exist? The burden of proof for belief in those beings lies upon those that state that they exist. The same applies to the concept of God or Satan.

No you turn it around.

First there was a theist who claimed "I believe in God AND I know for a fact that my belief is The Only Truth AND I know that other beliefs are wrong"
Then came the (a)theist who replied (not claiming anything) "Hello ... can you prove that your belief is a fact AND the beliefs of others are not a fact"

We came to this point. Can you answer the above question "Hello ... can you prove that your belief is a fact AND the beliefs of others are not a fact"

Take it as arrogance if you will, but I find it implicit in monotheism that there can only be one God. There's no room for any kind of satan, no need for a scapegoat. And if you look closely at the Bible, the Satan of today didn't exist in the beginning.
