... of what?
I am not fully convinced that it will not turn out to be someone like Pence, or Dan Coats, or Don McGahn etc. I am not fully convinced that someone like that would not have decided to use an intermediary to introduce them to the NYT editorial department.

I am however open to the idea that it is a lesser known (but still senior) official.

(apologies for the double negative)

Because, obviously, the NYT editorial department would otherwise have no clue who the people are. Right? Seriously?

I think you know that is not what I said.
I'm sorry. It seems to me that is exactly what you said or, at the very least, implied.

From what I understand, the Editorial Board of the NYT is a well seasoned and politically sophisticated body of journalists. Why might they require an intermediary to introduce them to a Pence?

I did not say an intermediary was required. What I am saying is that they might have chosen to approach through an intermediary.

Someone like Pence (or any other well known official) could come up with a reasonable explanation for speaking to a reporter at a newspaper. But it would be much harder to explain why they were speaking the editors.

And you might be correct in your thinking about this. I might be way off base. I am merely expressing a degree of uncertainty.

Interesting, but I am not fully convinced. As you say people like Pence, Conway etc would not need an introduction to the news division of the NYT, but what about the editorial division? I don’t think this is like talking to a reporter. If one of these high profile names has known to be in contact with the editorial staff that itself would raise questions even before the op ed was published.
Pence would be able to use his AOL email that he uses for government businesses to email the letter to them. I doubt any of the bigger names would need an introduction, but someone discreet to communicate through might be necessary.

Pence would have to be quite careless to rely on email for such a thing, though.

He already did rely on it for government business, and his account was hacked. It's not going through government servers, and it allows for easy and discreet communication.
