Old Bible Resources

In 1962, I was working in the kitchen of a large Hospital and had some contact with a very grumpy Dishwasher guy. One day, he handed me a Red Book, saying it was a Bible, and that maybe it would straighten me out.

It did turn out to be a Bible of sorts, though at that time in my life I would not have known one from a BLT sandwich. I was an avid reader and the whole book didn't take me very long. Toward the end, in what may have been the Book of Revelations, I was astonished to find a passage that read, "And the Black Man shall be his henchman". "His" being satan.

I would not address religion seriously for another 10 or more years, and sometime after I looked for that passage and could not find it. Google does not reveal it, so I am not sure where to go in search of it. I don't really have a need to find it aside from simple curiosity. I do have some groups in mind and have some questionable references from Wiki.

I'd heard that a few groups have adjusted their public views on the matter over the years, though I do not think it likely that the private views have changed.

In Genesis 9 there is reference to "The Curse of Ham", though reading it, I doubt that this is the passage I am looking for. I find the passage that I am looking for to be uncivilized in a very offensive way.

For me it is obvious that the skin color variation is genetic, and driven by climate. I come from really racist, and ignorant folk who migrated across America from Jamestown to now be in Oklahoma and points west. I feel deep shame for some of the things I was taught.

Sounds like a 'bible' written by the KKK of which there are some.

I did not know that. I know that Southern Oregon was a big KKK area in the 50's. When we arrived in Portland, there were still signs on some places that said, "Whites Only".

Someone altered the Bible to fit their political and racist agendas? Because it's so blatantly not something that belongs there we see that they made it up. Nowadays it's mostly people interpreting their scriptures in a way that fits those same agendas.
