I have heard Christians explain that spirit + body = soul
They usually refer to Genesis 2:7 -
"And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."
I have also heard that the spirit returns to God:
"Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.
Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.
Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity." -Ecclesiastes 12:6-8
So then my question is, who or what exactly goes to suffer eternally in hell? Obviously it is not the spirit since the spirit returns to God. And it is not the soul, since the soul is simply a spirit in a body. And surely a body without a spirit is merely a lump of lifeless matter. Can any Christian explain this to me?
