"Bra Storm"

My S.O. says that growing boobs can sometimes be painful and that the padding cuts down on the pain, and also hides swelling nipples.

Padded bras are commonly worn by women in countries which have a culture of 'female modesty' specifically because they hide the nipples.

I've seen a lot of breasts, lots. I don't wear bras because of an illness I have that makes my lymph nodes extremely painful
That is a good question and the point of the concerned mother. These are not just bras. These are padded bras designed to make little girls with no breasts look as if they do have them. It is the sexualization of prepubescent girls.

To me that is not a good thing.

I can understand a tiny bit of padding to comfort itchy nipples. The age that girls require said apparatus varies a lot. Gentle parental guidance is helpful. I'm past 70 and stopped with them due to painful lymph nodes.

I did finally read the article linked by the OP and it appears to have been an overreaction. I did a Mea Culpa, But then this is totally out of my experience.

I started developing at age nine and never had pain or tenderness. Maybe just lucky I guess.

Sheesh. If a 9 year old needs a bra, then she needs a bra. Would you withhold sanitary pads from a 9 year old if she needs them?

It's not about her needing a bra, it's about the bra bring padded.

Also, I disagree with the word 'need'. Bras are 100% a choice.

Instead of trying to guess anyone's motivations, I'd honestly leave all decisions about this to the women who use them.
Oh, we can't possibly do that! How will women know what's right unless we tell them? ;)

Well, I wonder what she means by padded? Big padding in a push up bra is one thing, but if it has padded lining, that's another. The latter can add comfort and make you feel less self conscious about nipples poking through and such.

I think it's also the job of the parents and other role models to tell girls that they don't need to have big breasts. Does she bother raising her daughter and help her cultivate good self-esteem? Like helping her understand that it's not a good idea to put so much worth in something so silly and/or if others do, they're juvenile jerks. She's a parent, so do some parenting!

The bras in the pictures don't look overly padded to me--just enough to hide nipples and add a bit of comfort to help girls get used to wearing bras. (The tortuous stuff like underwires comes later!)

I disagree that girls should have to get used to it though. I never wore a bra til I was about 13, and even then only because I was being made fun of. Those things suck and now if I must I wear a sports bra. I've also found that regular bras cover nips just fine, whatever the problem with nipples is.

Came across this rather amusing concern while paging through The Sun.

" Mum slams Marks and Spencer for ‘encouraging boob jobs’ by selling padded bras for kids as young as NINE

AN outraged mum has slammed Marks & Spencer for selling padded bras for girls as young as NINE , claiming it is encouraging kids to want a boob job.

Laura Milatos, 40, spotted the white cushioned bras in her local store in Shrewsbury, Shropshire and shared a picture on social media.

[Evidently this is suppose to make the reader gag with disgust]

The mum-of-two claims the star-patterned padded bras could lead to young girls wanting bigger boobs and think about getting a boob job.

She has called on the high street chain to move them to a more appropriate section of the store.

But M&S defended the lingerie and said they were "extremely common" and selling them is "normal practice".

Laura said: "I was just browsing the children's clothes section before coming across the bras.

"I was shocked when I saw it and just thought 'Oh my God!' what is it doing there?

"If my ten-year-old daughter put it on it would definitely look as though she had breasts.

"I don't want to give my daughter the idea that bigger boobs are better.

"I want her to grow up knowing having a flatter chest is fine.

Gives one a pretty good idea what kind of chest mommy Laura has. ;)

Anyway . . . . being a male I have little idea if she has a reasonable point here or not; although, it does seem she has rather misguided suspicions about childhood development.

Added question. Is that how bras are sold, by age?

Thoughts?

Well bra's are important quantum mechanical wave vector elements and a generalization of the wavefunction. It was Paul Dirac who introduced the bra and significantly simplified Quantum calculations for science students. Not sure whether padding them is a good idea though... oops... wrong section! :p:D

If a girl is old enough that she can't get away with wearing just a bikini bottom for swimming, then she's old enough to wear a bra. (Consistancyof standards is in order, here, imo.)

LOL, I wish i was that lucky! My nipples will wear holes in bras in no time! (I do my best to camoflage them by wearing prints.)

I've ditched underwires. I do realise though that not everyone has that luxury. Perk of having small ones, I suppose.

Well, I guess it depends on the culture's modesty rules and your own. For some reason, quite a few decided that nipples on males are totally ok but female nipples are magically sexual.

Whatever the reason, I personally don't feel comfortable having my nipples poking through clothing. I need that padded lining, otherwise I poke through. You will never see me topless either, even at the beach my breasts are always covered.
