Biblical Prophecy

Fully one third to one fourth of the bible is prophecy. In the Old Testament much of it was describing the birth, life, and death of Jesus, but also they talked about the end times. Daniel is the most well known end times prophet from the Old Testament. But despite this prominent section of the bible, why is it hardly ever taught? Perhaps because it is full of just signs and we can’t ever know for certain. Perhaps because people have had all credibility ruined when they predict the end of the world at a certain date but nothing happens. Despite these good reasons not to look much into this subject of the bible, we still need to look at it. Jesus said in Mathew 24:42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.”* We need to watch out, therefore we need to know what to look for. This essay is designed to show how the world looks like it can be corroborated to biblical end times prophecy.
There are several differing theories as proposed about the end times as depicted from the bible. These theories however, all include four things depicted in the bible: the millennium, Armageddon, the rapture, and the Tribulation. For instance, the theory of Preterism holds that most of the events prophesized in Revelations took place in 60-70 A.D. which led up to the Roman destruction of the temple. Another popular view Amillennialism which believes that we are living in the millennial kingdom today, and God is on earth through the holy spirit, the bible, and Christianity. However, the most common sense and backed up currently is also the one which stick most to biblical prophecy is Dispensational Premillennialism which believes that the tribulation will occur then Armageddon then the millennial kingdom (“Eschatology, End Times, and Millennialism: Competing Theories.”). Dispensational Premillennialism is the one closest to the area that fundamentalists should have. The rest of this essay is to show how the many of the prophecies, particularly those of geological disturbances, worldwide hatred of Israel, a one world government, and the rise of Babylon.

Miscellaneous
To start off with, one of the areas Jesus warned about many times as a sign of the end of the age is pestilence. Luke 21:11 says “There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places…” While disease can never be gotten rid of, and we have done much to stop the spread of disease and its fatality, it is supposed to be making a come back. Since 1977 there have been many different types of diseases to emerge. The most famous of these diseases are AIDS, Ebola, different strains of Hepatitis, West Nile Virus, SARS. In the years of 1977-1996 over 29 major diseases were found. Also many diseases are making a strong comeback, ones that were once not a problem are becoming a serious threat again. Diseases like tuberculosis, cholera, malaria and diphtheria are an example of these.
It is also logical to assume that these diseases will grow even stronger, and new diseases will be found. With the intense urbanization of the modern world, air travel, and population growth that diseases will be far more likely to spread. Another factor to consider is antibiotics. Diseases are becoming more and more resistant to antibiotics, in the 1940’s when antibiotics were first used, the disease was completely gotten rid of. Many diseases are finding ways around these medicines or building defenses up against them. According to The Third World Network’s website, an article said “By 1990, nearly every common pathogenic bacterial species had developed varying degrees of antibiotic resistance, often multiple resistances.” They later said “A strain of Staphylococcus isolated in Australia was resistant to 31 different drugs, including cadmium, penicillin, kanamycin, neomycin, streptomycin, tetracycline and trimethyloprim.” With the effectiveness of antibiotics decreasing, it is likely to assume that old diseases will be making a comeback (“Sowing diseases, new and old.”).
Many of the new diseases also are incredibly contagious and most are incurable. AIDS can be transmitted sexually and will kill you eventually. Ebola liquefies your insides in a matter of days and can be spread easily. A new one from just last year is SARS which started out in Southeast Asia and was being spread all over the continent of Asia and into Canada, this disease killed over 800 people and was being spread airborne, which means just a cough in a crowd can lead to hundreds suffering the disease. These new diseases are popping up out of nowhere and are already resistant to our most used medicine, and killing many.
Disease isn’t the only thing prophesized about though, verse quoted earlier, Luke 21:11 says “There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places…” So apparently there will be great earthquakes. And while there have been great earthquakes throughout all of geological history, it is thought that earthquakes with more frequency than ever before. Jan Egeland, UN Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, reports that earthquakes in Algeria and Iran happen with more frequency and estimates that “natural disasters affect up to 10 times more people per year than war and global conflict” (“Natural Disasters More Frequent Than Before”).
It also promises more famine. Once again, famine has been a near universal problem throughout all of history, however increasing desertification is causing the once arable land to die. Which of course destroys the vegetation and the local communities struggle to survive. This can be seen most easily today in Africa, its is estimated that Africa is losing approximately 300-400 million tonnes of topsoil every year. Also it is figured that around one third of the planet is arid or semi-arid, which will, according to estimates, raise significantly over the next century.
Another area predicted would be how the world treats Christians worldwide. Jesus said in Mathew 24: 9, “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me.” When he speaks of Christians, Jesus was probably talking about Christian fundamentalists and evangelicals. In America and Europe, Christians aren’t put to death that often, but they are in third world countries. There is a cultural war going on in America, between Christian fundamentalists and the rest of the world. Over the past few decades, the Christian right has been stepping up and being more vocal about their beliefs. But Christians are being persecuted all the time, no one would dare make fun a Muslim’s beliefs because that would be “politically incorrect”, but now Christians are insulted all the time by society.

However more was predicted than just these few geographic disturbances and a cultural war, a major situation is with the state of Israel. Israel is in the most volatile situation of any country in the world, with the whole world always looking to it, often with condescension. It also has the most nuclear weapons of any state not on the permanent seat UN Security Council. The cycle of violence that is seen in Israel is some of the deadliest, cruelest, and efficient destruction in the world.

Israel: A Centerpiece of Prophecy
Israel has a long history of this hatred against them (hereafter referred to as Anti-Semitism). The Babylonian empire conquered the Israelites about 603 B.C. They also destroyed the Jewish temple in Jerusalem- the one that was built by Solomon. This was the beginning of Diaspora- which is the worldwide spreading of Jews. When the Babylonians conquered Israel and especially Jerusalem, they were taken captive and spread all throughout the Babylonian empire. Eventually the Israelites got there land back, including Jerusalem. The Israelites eventually built up another temple and worshipped their God in it again. Once again though, the Israelites were conquered. This time by the Roman empire. The Israelites also were given special privileges, that way they could live by they own religious laws and practices. However the Israelites tried to revolt several times, but that was quickly put to an end by the Romans. In AD 70 after another of these failed attempts at revolt, the Roman army ransacked Jerusalem and destroyed the temple there. This was the final breaking moment, over the previous several centuries that Israelites had been leaving their land after being conquered, but after the Roman destruction of the temple and the sack of Jerusalem, Israelites were dispersed worldwide- mostly into Europe.

All end times prophecy (particularly Daniel and Revelations) talks about Israel being a state, and being its own people. Jesus’ return to earth could not have occurred if the nation of Israel did not exist. However, despite Diaspora, Israel was once again a nation in 1947. Due to wavering British foreign policy, both Arabs and Jews were being ruled in a colonial fashion for several decades prior to 1947. Once the U.N. was created, the British took the problem to international body and with a 2/3 majority, the nation of Israel became a Jewish and Arab state. The very same day that Israel declared independence, the Arab League Secretary, General Azzam Pasha, declared a jihad against the Jewish peoples. After a year of war the Arabs raged against the Jewish people, the Jews signed an armistice with Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan. It was this armistice that led to the formation of the modern Israeli state.

Israel today is in a dangerous situation. It is in a territory dispute with Palestinian Arabs which is fueled by religious and ethnic hatred. Palestinians frequently set off high-powered explosives in the streets of Israel, often causing dozens of civilians to die at a time. When other nations talk of peace and comes up with a plan for Israel, it invariably calls for the separation for Israel to allow a Palestinian state. But this will not happen, in scripture always speaks of Israel when it is whole. Israel also has the most nuclear weapons of any nation not having a permanent seat on the UN Security Council. No other nation in the world has such a quick, deadly, and unstable cycle of violence.

No other nation faces such international opposition as the nation of Israel. In Revelation 16, all the nations of the world would come together in the place called Armageddon, and then proceed to go into Jerusalem to destroy the Jewish peoples forever. In no other location on the earth is this such a good example of what Mathew 24:6 says, “You will hear of wars and rumors of wars”, since we hear about wars all the time, but not so much rumors of wars. But in Israel it happens all the time when we’re not sure what is going on. These prophecies and others show that it was predicted thousands of years ago, and its coming true today. Many people in Europe and America believe that the Israeli state is the most dangerous opposition to world peace. The most members of the US Presbyterian Church believe that there should be a Palestinian state, and is thinking of leaving Israel completely, the only other nation they’ve ever done that to is South Africa during apartheid. The former US ambassador to the UN, Jean Kirkpatrick, said that the UN’s treatments of Israel was outrageously insulting, and warned that there was a great potentiality for a second holocaust, one even worst than the first. Kirkpatrick also pointed out that the UN and its agencies have passed over 1,000 resolutions condemning Israel, but never a single resolution has passed condemning terrorist acts against Israel.

My speculation of what is to come of Israel, is a dangerous and frightening scenario, but has a good likelihood of happening. Now that Yasser Arafat is dead, and the Israeli government wouldn’t allow him to even be buried in the country of Israel, Palestinian Arabs will be upset and will set off multiple explosives. Arafat, however will be replaced by a more moderate leader, one who will speak out against the terrorist strikes. Despite new leadership in the PLO, Israel will always act the same way and respond to these new bombings with a rocket at the supposed perpetrators, which usually means a rocket launched into a crowded residential area. With the new moderate leader of the PLO, Israel responding to terrorists the same way they have always done, will seem outrageous to the international community. Israel will not allow itself to be separated into a Jewish state and a Palestinian state, even though that is what the international community will cry out for. America will still support Israel, despite growing opposition, and eventually the rest of the world will set up voting blocs in the UN and they will try things like high tariffs on items into Israel, economic sanctions, and perhaps even the native Jews in the other nations will be forcibly removed from those nations and put into Israel. If America still supports Israel, it will speak out against those unjust actions of the international community, and it will receive heat from European nations for defending Israel. Eventually America will have to cave in its support of Israel in order to get support from the international community on other matters, and once that happens, America will just then become the puppet of European interests and operations.

New Rome, One World Government: European Union

In biblical prophecies, the scriptures indicate that there will be a one world government. It will be headed by the antichrist, but it seems to have already have been around for a while. The bible says that in the history of the world there is only seven worldwide kingdom, these seven kingdoms are the Assyrian, Egyptian, Babylonian, Persian, Greek, Roman, New Roman empires. Six of these have already come and gone, and the only one left is the new Roman empire. This New Rome will be the last civilization, with the concept of globalization being the cornerstone of it. Scriptures mention a beast, the antichrist, that will lead this new world government once it becomes the only government in the world. It goes on and talks about ‘the mark of the beast’ which says you cannot buy, trade, or sell without this mark. This means the government will control the money, this one world system will. So it is logical to assume there will be only one currency. Also in this new world empire, we will all be one state, we will not be made of many nations. Scriptures also says that this new government will persecute Christians and Jews, with its secular humanist philosophies, like no other civilization has ever done.

There is one international organization starting to rise, that’s beginning to fit all of these criteria. A one world currency, one super nation over small nations, persecution of the Jews, and all in the name of globalization and peace. The European Union is this organization. The European Union was created in 1957, ten years after Israel became a state, under the Treaty of Rome.

To start off with, I’ll begin with the standardization of all European currencies into a single one. Currently 13 of the 25 nations in the EU have the Euro as their currency. The Euro is controlled by the European Central Bank, one of the components of the EU’s government. Previously, these nations would control their own currency, and adjust it occasionally to strengthen their economy. Now that they use a single common currency, the European Central Bank makes all those decisions, and control the currency of over a dozen nations including some of the strongest in the world. Nations that, economies are struggling, can’t adjust their interest and exchange rates, some of those most potent weapons in attacking a more stagnant economy. Germany is a prime example of this, a few years ago it was a European economic powerhouse, but today it has a high unemployment, but the nation of Germany is unable to take and adjust its currency to try and increase the number of jobs. The European Central Bank is a legal independent body of the EU(“Draft Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe”). This means that the European Commission, European Parliament, and other legislative bodies in the EU cannot legislate any law about monetary policies, nor can they legislate any law that might be construed as anything limiting the power of the European Central bank. Also, within all areas of its competency, meaning all areas where its involved, in this case all matters fiscal, the European Central Bank must be consulted with about pieces of legislature in the various EU legislative bodies. The soon-to-be unified, instead of competing, European market soon will become a powerhouse and will quickly outpace even US and Chinese economies.

Micah 4:11 says: “But how many nations are gathered against you.” And Revelation 16:12-16 speaks about the final battle of Armageddon where the armies of the world come against Israel, particularly Europe’s growing hatred of the Jewish state. It should be noted that in the EU constitution sets up a mutual defense policy. National military power must be given to be used at the behest of EU legislative bodes. Member states attacked must be given military and economic aid by other member states. This constitution specifically states that this mutual defense policy will turn into a common defense policy when EU legislative so decides to change it. This will make the EU control a European army in which all European states must give its entire military power to be used at the disposal of the new European super-state.

What is a nation? Most answers are along the lines of: “A political organization that claims sovereignty over a defined territory and jurisdiction over the people in that territory.” When the EU finally reaches its goal of lack of internal borders, a common defense, and a single European market, then the EU would be its own state. It would claim the true sovereignty over Europe, it is analogous to the United States’s federal government and the states’ (e.g. New York, Wisconsin) government. The EU is the new wave of globalization, literally becoming one state, and supporting all scientific efforts. EU member states often cooperate in other political organizations like the UN, setting up a European voting bloc. The nation-states of Europe are slowly becoming dominated by a super-state, a single nation that rules all of the member states. Primacy of law must be given to the EU, currency is now controlled by a European Central Bank that answers to no one, and military aid must be given to the EU when legislation says so. The nation-states are losing their sovereignty, and still more nations keep wishing to join, there are twenty-five members right now, and three are being considered to join right now.

From these understanding of both biblical prophecy and the current political situation, it is easy to believe that the European Union will rise to an even greater power. It’s lack of economic competition between member states will help fuel the European economy and collectively they will within a decade or so be able to outpace even the United States and China in terms of economic output and power. Already the EU is one of the strongest currencies, it is stronger than the dollar. And with rising deficit in America, it will continue to get stronger than the dollar. European voting blocs will be created in all international organizations which European states participate in, and if the EU dictates policy in everything, then member states must comply with EU policy. This mutual defense policy, will turn into a common defense policy, most likely at a time of major crisis. All of these things will only strengthen the European Union,. As the United States is declining from the international superpower it once was, Europe will take America’s place. Europe is already trying to take America’s place, and is getting angry at America and our foreign policy, most noticeable the War in Iraq.

Ancient Empire Returns: Babylon

Revelation 18 talks about the fall of Babylon. In the scriptures, it indicates that Babylon will become the capital of the world and the economic center of the world. In the prophecy, merchants from around the world weep and mourn over the loss of Babylon. Many people believe that Babylon is just a symbolic name for a great city, like New York, London, or Paris. If you look at the scriptures literally though, then a new city must be formed and must be called Babylon, and it is probable that this is what is going to happen.

Genesis 10:10 speaks of Babylon as being in the “land of Shinar”, which is an area of modern Iraq. This “land of Shinar” is much of the same area as ancient Mesopotamia. Scholars consider Hammurabi to be the leader of the golden age of ancient Babylon. Then Neo-Babylon came about, the one talked about in the book of Daniel, and Nebuchadnezzar II was the leader of Babylon at its greatest strength. Isaiah 13:17 speaks against Babylon says, “See, I will stir up against them the Medes…” When it speaks of the Medes, it is speaking about the Meto-Persian empire, more commonly known as just the Persian empire. Eventually the Persian empire did conquer the land that contained Babylon(“Ancient Babylonia - History of Babylonia”).

After several millennia, this land is now in the nation of Iraq. The previous Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein, also wanted to rebuild Babylon. That was one of his ultimate goals. During the Iraq-Iran War during the late 1970’s, Hussein even started trying to rebuild Babylon in order to boost morale, but had to stop due to financial constraints. Right now American and a few other nations are in Iraq, trying to set up a democratic government, despite opposition from a violent minority. Much of the world was outraged when US troops invaded Iraq in order to bring down the Hussein regime despite UN opposition to such a maneuver. Right now, America has lost respect and credibility in other parts of the world (particularly Europe) and we are having to take the heat for our actions which they didn’t like. Despite internal Iraqi insurgency and international outrage over our actions, it is likely that after a while, we will be successful in turning Iraq into a democratic society.

The rise of Babylon is soon. Once Iraq is turned into a capitalist nation, it is feasible that once American troops are off of the Iraqi soil, there will be a resurgence of national pride and they will embark on this new system of government. An abundance of new businesses would be created, creating a need for workers, and people in other nations who need work would come to Iraq for work. The most powerful companies would be the oil companies, and with Iraq’s giant amount of oil reserves, those companies would get rich pretty quickly. Iraq would be a centerpiece of trade in that area of the world, since Saudi Arabia, Iran, Afghanistan do not do much business. This area of the world would become extremely rich, and could easily lead to the rise of a great new city.

Conclusion

The final speculation is to put all of these things together. America will fade more into the background as European super-state is being formed, the cultural war gets more fierce, and as the world retaliates for US support of Israel and the invasion of Iraq. Disease, famine, and Christian persecution are at an all time high. A possible rise of the ancient city of Babylon, a definite rise in a possible one-world government with the elimination of the rights to nation-states and self sovereignty. All of these situations point towards the prophecies coming true, all of these things are happening very quickly too, indicating to me that the rest of the prophecies (the rapture and the tribulation) will soon become fulfilled too, perhaps even within our generation.

If they don’t happen though, my faith will not be shaken, God is on his own timetable, and I wouldn’t claim to know when He will act. After showing you all of this, all I can say is to study the prophecy if you want to learn more, and if you do believe: just wait and hope.

Greetings! :)

Much of the Bible is indeed prophecy, and as we Baha'is see it, most if not all of these prophecies have already been fulfilled! Indeed, there are numerous prophecies of the coming of the Baha'i Faith and its founder, Baha'u'llah. Some of these even go so far as to yield the exact years of its beginnings!

So unsurprisingly, Biblical prophecies are a fairly popular study topic among various Baha'is! . . .

There are various Baha'i books and Web sites that go into the details on these prophecies; for those who are interested, I recommend www.bahai-faith.org and www.bahai-library.org as good starting points.

So peophecy and its fulfillment is always a fascinating topic! . . . :)

Regards,

Bruce

The EU with its current ideas will fail. You don't need to be a rocket-scientist or a bible scholar to understand that. History is repeating itself over and over again, because people aren't interested in learning from past mistakes.

I thought Jesus didn't come around until the new testament

Regardless, I do feel that much of the prophecies predicted in the new testament have come to pass or are coming to pass- I'd say the mistake is believing that the bible is the only text that predicts/has predicted such things, or that this one rock in the cosmos will live forever- all things die.
