Evolution a proven fact!

Or, of course, I could be insane.

I must have missed it when I was looking back through the thread, but how did this whole thing come up about how you can't really prove anything 100% true? I do agree that really you can't be 100% sure that something is true. But many things are proven so well that to doubt them because their is a slight chance they might be wrong is just stupidity.

If this was being used to lend some validity to the idea that it's ok to believe in Creationism due to the slight chance that it could be true, then I stick by what I said before on the issue.

Apart from the title reading "Evolution is a proven fact!", the thread is eleven pages old (on my post per page count). A thread sticking closely to the OP for so long would be some kind of record. In fact, I'm half-surprised a troll spouting answersingenesis.com hasn't shown up yet.

Page 6 tends to deal mostly with this it seems... The last post on that page actually states the 100% proof idea. I myself agree that you cannot prove anything in the physical world 100% but you might as well round to 100% on most theories

Here is an essay by Stephen Jay Gould entitled "Evolution as fact and theory." He defines fact as
confirmed to such a degree that it would be perverse to withhold provisional assent.
And he defines theory as
ideas that explain and interpret facts.

Other than that, I don't have anything to add. Enjoy yourselves all.

From that essay:

Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact.

Thanks for contributing.

I would agree with this part of his statement.

I think he's being a bit superficial here. It does not indicate that religion is necessarily dangerous. Instead, what it indicates is that certain religious people in the US launched an intense, sustained campaign some decades ago to discredit both scientists and the theory of evolution, and that their campaign has paid off over time. But SheepFarmer has not demonstrated that these lunatics are representative of all religious people in general.

If SheepFarmer were accurate in his claim that the hold religion has over people's minds were necessarily dangerous, then we would expect to see no instances of when religion has been beneficial to people and society. However, there are numerous instances when religion has benefited people and society. So, SheepFarmer is wrong to assert that religion is necessarily dangerous.

this is very true

but religion can be very dangerous to radicals in that certain religion, cultists, and many other certain situations

In order for evolution to occur, the basic elements must be found/ Where did these come from, the big bang. what created teh big bang? it was an enormous, possibly infinite amount of energy. What created that energy. God created the energy. simple

Huh? evolution doesn't say how life came about... It is a theory about how organisms can change. Check other scientific theories for how life came about =)

Needless to say, Gould's and Eldridge's "punctuated equlibria" theory is a good read, and explains a lot about what palentologists have found in the fossil record. I attended a lecture by Gould a number of years ago where he discussed statistics and it's relation to evolution (among other thing). He was a very entertaining speaker, and very knowledgable. It's a shame he is no longer with us.
