Winter Olympics 2018: Norovirus hits Pyeongchang to add to cold worry | Metro News
It’s the latest crisis to hit the Games, which officially gets under way with the opening ceremony on Friday. There were already concerns about the severity of the cold currently freezing Pyeongchang. Temperatures during the opening ceremony are expected to be -10C, while the wind chill during rehearsals plummeted to -23C.
Why on Earth would they complain about mild winter temperatures in winter being too cold?
It's fundamental to the Winter Olympics to have below freezing temperatures for outdoor venues.

This isn't the only example where I see mistaken outrage.

Is that area not use to that level of cold? Single digits and below zero temps are normal out here on the plains but my mother in Penn state is shocked by it.

A friend of mine fought in the Korean War. He didn’t like to talk about it but he once commented about how blo*dy cold it was especially at night.

To be fair to them, the stadiums used for the ceremonies are usually at lower altitudes than the open venues for the outdoor events so generally aren’t that cold. Pyeongchang is at a higher altitude, hence the lower temperatures than usual expected for the opening ceremony. It’s over-dramatic and rhetorical coverage and they would have gone the same way regardless of the facts, but this is at least based on some element of reality.

This isn't the only example where I see mistaken outrage.
That’s because it isn’t actually news, it’s low-brow entertainment. Metro is a “news”paper published by the same organisation that squeezes out the Daily Mail. They don’t get readers with facts, they get readers with drama. :(

My father fought there too. We were from Minnesota, but it was cold even by Minnesota standards at the Chosin Reservoir. I have read articles that said at the worst it dropped to -35 F, and that is without windchill. The temperatures at the Olympics are outright balmy. It is not cold there, but the virus is a legitimate concern. With the vaccine running only fifteen percent effective that is what they should have focused on.

Aye, the virus is a real story.
There's no good result from getting a case of
the Hershey squirts while skating or skiing.

Thank you, @Wirey , for that technical term.

News is to make money, so what makes the news is what interests people. All of it has some sort of bias.

Personally, I find the trivial habits (like what they wore) of famous people to be just dumb. Who cares? (Obviously many people do, but why?)

Most of our news is contextless at best. You can't explain complex social issues in 30 seconds. That's why I prefer to get news from the BBC or Al Jazeera because at least they give the history and context of an issue.

What a bunch of whoosies. Didn't hear any whimpering in 1988 at the Olympics in Calgary Canada.

And it's colder there!
