The future of Iran

Iran is a great nation, which can be proud of its glorious past. However the 20th century was the most difficult period for its identity and its struggle for survival.
I particularly love this movie, which portrays a country in which the hope for freedom, secularism and economic improvement is something concrete and possible. And I guess that Soraya was the emblem of this hope.
Now, comparing the reality of the 21th century to that portrayed in the movie...everything looks so far and impossible.

Western liberals generally support the current Iranian regime, citing abuses of the Shah and label any criticism as Islamophobic. I'm sure some mods will warn you about your 'inflammatory' thread.

As a western liberal (I guess), I neither support the Shah, (nor do I particularly like any of the past shahs), nor do I really support the Islamic Revolution that followed. Nor do I like their system of government and its oppression on its people.

I do however sympathize with the people and find the culture fascinating beyond belief.

I'm sure they won't. But if they did, tell them your personal experience, so they will see what we are dealing with

Well...I understand...and I kinda agree...but sometimes I wonder what Iran would be like today, if there still was a modern monarchy with very secular values..
surely better than what they have today.

Today's Iranians don't want to go back to a monarchy and they also want the current regime gone. Without some sort of outside support, they can't do much to change things as the security forces will make them disappear or kill them. There aren't enough people willing to put their lives on the line. They would lean to the right and be Islamic Modernists.
