The numeral system along with zero, that made higher mathematics, science and faster accounting possible.

The earlier roman numeral system was incapable of the same.

Language, crop cultivation, domestication... All make humans what we are now, but I'm gonna pick smartphone. I use mine every day - even more than my computer, now. ;)

Fire making.

As far as I'm aware, fire isn't necessarily a uniquely human invention, as other hominids could have utilized it's use. Come to think of it, neither is domestication (which certain species of ants have done) or cultivation, language (even some species of trees can communicate), etc etc.

Hmmm... Makes one think. :)

Distillation.

It's used all the time in industry and also gives us drinks like whiskey and brandy.

_________ you tell me
The sloped ditch.

It allowed us to bring water from where we found it to where we needed it, whether for drinking or growing crops.

It allowed us to take our waste away from where we lived.

Those two benefits have saved many times more lives than all the doctors in all of history.
