The LOVE/HATE thread: High School

I'm trying to learn some interesting things about other members' experiences growing up. Whether you're in secondary school now, or have already graduated (or have graduated decades ago) I'm interested in reading about some of things you enjoy(ed) at the time, and some of the things you hate(d).

I'll start:

Graduated 1997
Loved: cheerleaders; friday night parties; not having to pay bills; Grad Nite & prom; skateboarding; decorating my locker; drawing on desks; passing notes

Hated: soggy tater tots; teachers saying "you'll need this for the 'real world' "; kegs; the phrase, "I got SO drunk last weekend"; meeting cute girls who I realized I couldn't date because they had a "bad reputation" among my friends; sporting events.

Loved: colorguard, marching band, my sense of music

Hated: myself, cheerleaders, dancers, mormons, anybody who glanced in my direction, prom and any other guy ask girl dance, dating, boyfriends (not mine, my friends), my teachers, the school, the school district, the utah hairstyle and fashion style.

Try poofy hairstyles that are a mix between country singers, skunks and california girls.

And shirts and dresses that make the girls look pregnant with huge chunky sandals.

High school was such a crashing bore I've forgotten nearly everything about it.

I remember one English teacher, my Woodshop teacher, 1 friend and 2 acquaintances I went on to college with, and the fun I had debating in the "Bible as Literature" class.

Other than that, I remember reading a lot of books, teaching Lear in the English class as the student teacher had never read anything by Shakespeare (!?) and having a blast working on the lathe.

I seem to have shocked my mother earlier this summer when we were talking about graduation and I said that the only reason I went through with the blasted ceremony was because it was important to her. As far as I was concerned they could've mailed me the diploma.

I adored my two of my history teachers, one English teacher, one economics teacher, my Japanese teacher, my Sensei, the tree, laying out on the football field writing poetry for class, mountain dew, coffee, being accepted to every college I applied to, skipping class and still getting As...

I loathed all the rape and sexual assault, couple of the teachers, a couple of the students, name tags, not being able to afford the colleges I was accepted to, the constant suicide attempts by my friends and one who suceeded, fighting with my father, not having my license, being a year younger than everyone...

High school was terrible. Life has only gotten better since!

I feel so left out, I won't start highschool until next year :sad4: .

Can I talk about junior high instead?

Things I love: lunch, pep ralleys, football games, Drama club, my friends, my locker, bookcovers, the first day, the last day, guys

Things I hate: math, finals, reading lists, cafeteria food, INTRAMURALS, P.E. uniformas, push-ups, mile runs, jumping jacks...wait, this is all about gym class :D , populars, waking up early, not enough time between classes, guys

Loved: band, chemistry (I DESTROYED the curve), academics in general (I was, er am, a total nerd), my gf (who is now my wife :D), church (I was such a self-righteous fundie though...), the "undergroud newspaper" that my friends and I circulated anonymously (hyper-literate dorky fun), learning about transcendentalism in English Lit (thank you Emerson!)

Hated: doing HW (I was, er am, such a procrastinator), uh... that's probably about it. I loved school. I was great at it. :D If only work were as easy to conquer.:149:

Loved: Stage crew, photo and art class, english class(es), the hour before class, locker decor contests, and all my girlfriends (shockingly I still see most of them on a very regular basis), fencing, ICS (the "International Cultural Society, an after school club I helped run), open campus, sci-fi fantasy magazine (though it was short lived =()

Hated: School security, actors, science (I know, shocking), math, the pretentious popular people (who I recently found out thought my group of friends were cooler than they were..), pep rallies, the kickline team, having to learn about things I never again used in life, having to decide what I wanted to do with my life in the span of 4 months

Loved: My girlfriend. Football games. Just about all of my classes except my chemistry class with Wild Bill Struck and my psychology class. My friends. Getting good grades without trying too hard. Hanging out in the halls before and between classes. Lunchtime. Art class and pink floyd fridays. Lacrosse my senior year. Graduation.

Hated: Myself for trying so hard to be cool and failing. Not having very many good friends. Chemistry and psychology class. Getting in trouble with my english teacher for ordering mexican food and a pizza to his class. Feeling guilty after doing our senior prank. The pressure to do things I didn't want to. How mean I was to people who didn't deserve it

Loved: Doing my hair, dancing, going to prom my junior year, my first real boyfriend, friends, going cruising, going to the movies, the odd neon fashions of the '80s


Hated: Being dumped by my boyfriend two days before senior prom, math (I was bored since I learned all the advanced mathematics by the time I was in 8th grade), crushes, friends who moved on with other interests, trying to get to class on time, the odd neon fashions of the '80s

Hated: Homework, tests, some of my teachers, people trying to be cool, classmates' emphasis on identity

Loved Boarding School.friends Games, boxing,rugby, air cadets,cross country running.fives.
loved. maths, physics, chemistry, biology. not bothering with course work...every thing in those days was exam based. not needing to study more than a minimum to keep near the top.
College. Fun fun FUN Girls Girls Girls
Hates ..That I knew every thing they wanted to teach me before I got there.
