Baptism

Is baptism necessary? Can we have an afterlife without it? Can we go to heaven without it? Do all religions have a baptismal like ceremony?

In Judaism there is a mikvah for ritual cleansing and for conversion purposes. But i don't think a batism in the christian sense is really needed for "salvation".

One christian's perspective:There are several verses in the Bible that show the necessity of baptism.

Matthew: 28:19-Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

Acts 2:38-Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Galatians 3:27-for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.

1 Perter 3:21-Corresponding to that, baptism now saves you-- not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience--through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

Also, every case of conversion recorded on the New Testament emphasized baptism. That, to me, shows its importance in our salvation. Just my thoughts.

I think that baptism is just a symbolic cleansing of the body, so that the person sees it as their soul being cleaned. I am baptized every morning before work.:jiggy:

(edit: I believe) Baptism of the spirit is a nessecity, water baptism is not.

GOD on Baptism

“As for baptism, this was Jesus' idea of establishing a covenant with ME. Was it important? He thought so. The symbolism of baptism has
ALL(WAYS) been a cleansing or a fresh start, whether it BE through water or through fire. Is baptism necessary? That depends on the individual. Do I demand or expect it? No. I LOVE you either way.”

“Consider baptisms the first act a parent commits to in the formation of how they expect their children to act and live. You can almost anticipate the uphill conflict they will have with their child throughout the ages. I AM not casting judgment on ALL parents or religions because I observe that children will eventually adopt, change, or drop their inherited faith as they grow older. They usually implement this by themselves. Think about what baptisms are for a moment, though. It's like parents are saying, "Welcome to the family! Now I expect you to grow up in exactly this manner."

Personally, I do not remember any references in the Old Testament about the requirement for baptism. I do not think it would BE something that GOD changed his mind about.

Catholics believe that Baptism is necessary for salvation.

"Baptism . . . now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a clear conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ" (1 Pet. 3:21; cf. Acts 2:38, 22:16, Rom. 6:3–4, Col. 2:11–12).

Yet Christians have also always realized that the necessity of water baptism is a normative rather than an absolute necessity. There are exceptions to water baptism: It is possible to be saved through "baptism of blood," martyrdom for Christ, or through "baptism of desire", that is, a conscious or even unconscious desire for baptism.

Not all religions have baptisms. Well they may, but are often "initiations". (Please do not confuse the two).

To be rewarded with Death, one must sin.

If water baptism is necessary how could Jesus promise the thief on the cross a heavenly afterlife?

23:43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

my faith does not have baptisms... we do have ritual clensing but it isn't a 'initation' as soul type pointed out. We clence in many ways, smudging, sweat lodge, and going to water to name just a few. Cleansing is more of a way to clear your mind and spirit from spiritual/emotional baggage so that you can start clean and refreshed than to wipe away 'sin'. (since my spirituality doesn't have a christian sin concept) So it isn't 'nessisary' to get to heaven, just a way to make the jurney easier.
