The arts provide us with many fine tales for inspiration and entertainment, some of which appeal to us more than others. We tend to have some sort of genre preference, and try from time to time to get into others outside of our norm. Are there particular genres that you just can't get into? Why do you think that is?

(yes, I realize the poll options are limited - there are too many genres to fit them all in; if something isn't in the poll, please post and tell us about it!)

Yeah, most of the ones I've had inflicted upon me have been kind of rubbish. Maybe it's that most of the tales enshrine heterosexual monogamous relationships with two people who I don't care about. So boring... lol.

Musicals - for the most part, however I did like "The Sound of Music".

Poetry. I remember in english they tried to get me to discuss the symbolism of a poem. I just couldn't really relate.

Otherwise I kind of enjoy the other artful genres you listed.

I voted "horror/thriller". The "Halloween season" brought this to mind recently. Horror movies never scare me. At best, they make me laugh, but it isn't an intelligent laugh. I've never seen one with sharp dialogue, interesting plotting or character development.

Romance, Action, and Dystopian. Never really got into them, but I can watch them if there's nothing else to see.

I love Horror, Drama, and Fantasy though.

I just voted for crime/mystery. I can't think of a single exception in that genre I've actually enjoyed.

I almost voted for horror/thriller. I like a good number of thrillers, but I hardly ever enjoy horror. I might like it more if it ever actually scared me. Instead I'm usually rolling my eyes.

Romance, especially in music. One of the things I like most about metal is that it has a relatively low ratio of love songs, which I think are quite possibly a candidate for the most cliched thing in all of entertainment media.

Oddly, though I write smut, I just can't bring myself to enjoy reading most other erotica.

Nobody chose science fiction. We should change this forum's initials to NF (Nerdy Forums) and maybe have a new forum banner with a big Sudoku in the background.

For the poll, I chose historicals/western and fantasy. I enjoy films from all the genres listed, but I like those two the least. I like urban fantasy but I don't think I've ever read a high fantasy novel such as Lord of the Rings or even Harry Potter. I do love the Western game Red Dead Redemption, however. Don't care about fantasy games, though.

I was about to, but since I like Star Trek and Dr Who I suppose I sort of do. But as a rule I won't read it or take anything more than a superficial interest.

Oh, okay. Since romance has the most votes and sci-fi has none so far, I'll settle for calling all of us emotionless geeks.

I can't stand westerns. I never had any interest in that area of history, all of the "classics" bored me to tears. No thanks.

I checked two: horror/thriller and dystopian/survivalist.

I don't like horror stories because they are overtly and deliberately manipulative, and I don't like being manipulated. They also tend to be very unoriginal. I guess their authors are too busy manipulating us to bother thinking up an original story.

And I don't like dystopian/survivalist stories because they're too dark, too depressing, and generally uninspired. I only hope I die before we get to experience the real thing.

Story themes and genres that I do like are science fiction and time travel, historical/period fiction, and action and drama. I'm not that keen on romance or comedy, but if it's well written and acted, I'm good with it.

My most hated, despised, loathed, and avoided at all cost genre of ... anything, however, is SHOW TUNES! Ahhhhhhggg! Mankind has not invented a WORSE genre of creative expression then that one! I can stomach musical theater, but when the music is removed from the theatrical setting, and the specific context of the specific play, if becomes a means of abject and horrific torture!

This one cast a couple of votes.

First vote cast was horror/thriller. While there are some exceptions here and there, I really dislike gratuitous violence or adrenaline junkie sorts of things. Second vote cast was comedy/satire. Too much of it is pedestrian humor that I don't find at all humorous.

back in fourth or fifth grade, I read a book called "Across Five Aprils." I really enjoyed it, and wanted to read more like it.

The school librarian assumed that I meant that I wanted more books about the Civil War.

What I really wanted was good stories told well.

Of the categories offered, as well as others I can think of, I've read, watched and heard ones of good quality...but most are not. Not even my favorite authors/producers/actors/etc. are always good...

So I didn't vote, because there really isn't a genre that of itself is not at least potentially appealing...there are just some I don't do much with...and any more, reading is pretty much a struggle for me, and most movies...and music...so I guess now there isn't any genre that I'm really into...
