Why is it important to thank God

The old 100 is a call the thank God, a form of glorifying God by depending on God. Why is that important or good? The old 100 is the only Psalm with thanks in the title 'A psalm of thanks' so it is probably a reasonable start to look at regarding thanksgiving.

There is a scripture that speaks of what happens when we sin seriously; it says that we are making God serving us. He doesn't like this.

The reason I mention this is because, we are at the bottom; thus, we should be grateful and show it, when God 'carries our daily burden' and gives us our needs. It is appropriate and helps us get into the right frame of mind. We should always realize that God helping us is not something he has to do at all.

God I love this stuff, its like listening to children as they understand their relationship to their source.

I think generally in religion someone says "it would be good if we do" , which over time gets transliterated to" you must", to eventually we will kill you if you don't. Now Christianity has mostly abolished we kill you although they love to use the term "heritic" a kind of religious slander sounds really really self important.

Happy to oblige.

I am sure you might like the ungodly ones much better. Who do you think the likeliest to go kill wantonly - the one who is trying to please his or her God with good behavior? Or, the one who has a burr up his derriere and needs to pay back for some conceived gripe?

My problem is that you believe in ungodly ones?

Sorry for the poor phrasing. Perhaps, unbelievers, infidels, or atheists - might be preferable. ;)

Do you think atheists would like to be named 'godly ones' - you are tickling my funny bone.:D

I can't possibly understand how a Christian can think that this refers to anything but the thanksgiving sacrifice. It says the word "todah" which is the name of the thanksgiving offering. Same like in Isa. 53:10 where the word "asham" automatically means "fault offering" according to all Christian translations. Nothing here about giving thanks.

Is it not vanity to think that we could glorify God?

Nope, we glorify God in our dependence on Him . Thanksgiving is a form of reflecting that and acknowledging God's provision.

Not thanking and not glorifying God is viewed as a problem in Romans 1

As Ephesians 1:12 says we are here to serve to the praise of God's glory so the whole purpose of our existence is involved.
So, to me for that reason we should be thankful to God. After all, according to Psalms 100:3 it is God who made us.
So, to God as our Father (life Giver) we owe our life, our very existence, to the God of the Bible.
