Why is the Bible the Final Authority on What is or isn't "Christian"?

I believe you are suggesting that "Christian" means the totality of possible beliefs as opposed to accreditation and essential belief.

I got that once from someone who felt my view of the Trinity didn't match up to his. He said I wasn't a Christian. I believe people around me credit me as one and I believe I am one in essential belief but no doubt am a heretic in the sight of those who hold incorrect doctrines.

Muffled,
It makes no difference how anyone judges you or anyone else!!
Notice how Paul put this, 1Corinthians 4:3-5.
We are to be judged by what the Bible says that we should do, or not do, and we will be judged by Jesus when he comes again to earth, Acts 17:31, 2Thessalonians 1:6-10, Matthew 25:31-46, Revelation 19:11-21. We were given, in God’s word, the conditions that would be on earth, when Jesus returns. Those conditions are clearly seen today. If we would like to live forever, in a paradise earth, it would behave us to follow, as closely as we can, Jesus footsteps, 1Peter 2:21. Jesus is at the door, now!!!

Sunstone,
Most things come down to this; God had His word written down, and promised to protect His word from every generation, Psalms 12:6;7. The Bible tells us to put our trust in God, meaning what is written in the Bible, Proverbs 3:5,6. God says not to trust in men because no Salvation is in men, Psalms 146:3,4. In fact, Cursed is the man who trusts in men, Jeremiah 17:5, but blessed is the man who puts his trust in Jehovah God, Jeremiah 17:7. We are told not to put trust in our heart, because it can lead us wrong, Jeremiah 17:9,10, Proverbs 28:26.
We know that men come to different conclusions about things, depending on their education, even books that are written are obsolete before the get to the book shelves. Depending on a persons position, he sees things differently, because men think one subject is more important, at least to them. Peoples opinions change constantly, and no person can be expected to have a perfect memory, so passing on knowledge about God’s purposes, cannot be left to men to transmit God’s word accurately, down through the generations.
Jesus answered the question about traditions at Matthew 15:1-20, 18-20, Mark 7:7,8.
A very important point to remember, we are going to be judged by what the Bible says. Would you want to be judged by man’s memory about what God said, or by what He says, in His word, the Bible, Isaiah 40:8, 2Timothy 3:16:17, 2Peter 1:20,21, 1Peter 1:25. Even in the first century, many of the things taught by the Pharisees were traditions of men, not what was written in the Bible. Jesus was under obligation to obey the Bible, not men! Just as we are!!!

What is the exegesis behind the author's text?

For instance, someone can put their trust in "God" and not put their trust in the Bible.

For instance, man wrote the Bible. Yet, cursed is the man who puts their trust in men.

For instance, it says not to put trust in the heart. What happens after the heart is transformed?

For instance, the "Word of God" can be interpreted by someone to not mean "the Bible."

Another instance, it states that it is appointed for man to die once. What death is it referring to? The Bible mentions "die to self." Or death as in some sort of separation from "God." Then there is the literal interpretation that someone physical literally dies once.

Wouldn't it be called "the words of God" if it were the Bible, rather than singular?

Then even in the first century, the Pharisees questioned Jesus on texts taken literally about marriage and a wife and brothers. And Jesus said that they erred in the texts. Does this mean not to take the texts literally?

What fruit does one get by needing to know about the past? Not only does it seem that people are told they have to believe in a "God" that is very evil if the texts are taken literally, but they also have to believe in a book and take that literally as well.

I like this one:
mat 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy by thy name, and by thy name cast out demons, and by thy name do many mighty works?
23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

The fact is that I know Jesus as my Lord and Savior. I respect the Bible but I obey God. Whenever He finds something I am doing that He doesn't like He lets me know and I change my ways. It is much too easy to justify wrong actions by misinterpreting the Bible which is what slaveholders in the south did.

Excellent Scripture! Raises interesting questions: like, since it takes power to "cast out demons" & "do many mighty (powerful) works", from what source would these ones get this power? Apparently, not from Jesus or His Father! And why?

But your last sentence is what I wanted to focus on.... Jesus said His followers would be ID'd by their LOVE, for each other AND EVEN their enemies. So, if one is interpreting (i.e., living by) Scripture using love as a guide, as opposed to selfishness (because, really, the opposite of love isn't hate as much as it is selfishness), then that is probably the more accurate and divinely approved way to live. Hurting another, let alone killing others, would definitely be a misinterpretation of the Bible Thruout the centuries, millions have gotten it wrong....and still are..... because they've followed the crowd. The truthfulness of Revelation 12:9 is so obvious.

Take care.

EDIT: I guess, since the Bible contains within its pages, the Laws given to Israel, a person should ask himself, "Do I want to live as an Israelite under the Mosaic Law, or as a follower of Christ?" They are different things.

Yes, I believe the Bible describes what is love and what is not but even that can be misinterpreted.

I believe following Christ fo many is just a way to follow a new law. I believe having received Jesus as Lord and Savior that I am in Christ and love is in me as a fruit of the Spirit.
Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23 meekness, self-control; against such there is no law.

Fortunately, for Christians there are many other Scriptures that reinforce and clarify this issue. To start out, Paul gave us the definition of agápe love @ 1 Corinthians 13:1-8; couple that with the counsel of Philippians 2:2-4 and Ephesians 4:22-25; Ephesians 4:29-32 and Colossians 3:12-14, etc., etc. Then to emphasize how important it all is, we were given the admonition at 1 John 4:8-16, 1 John 4:20,21, and 1 John 3:10-15. These passages can only be misinterpreted by those looking for excuses.

Take care.

Think about romantic love. A girl came to me one day and told me all the good things about herself. If love were just going through a list of all the good things I should have loved her but the truth is there was no romantic love between us.

I believe you can read passages about love in the Bible until you are dizzy but it won't put love in your heart. Probably what works best is the recognition of this one: 1Jo 4:19 We love, because he first loved us.
