For me, I think those verses are saying we're supposed to treat our bodies with respect. After all, our bodies are:
a)temporary
b) God's property
Jesus could return tomorrow and it would all be over. A few moments of pleasure from indulging in carnal weakness could cause you an eternity of sorrow. Using products such as alchohol, tobacco, and drugs could cause you an early death-and then you'll have to explain to God why you're standing before Him so soon!
According to 1 Corinthians 6:15-20, our bodies are God's property, and therefore for God's pleasure. Your body isn't for your pleasure. It's not for anyone else's pleasure. Our goal in the body is to be pleasing to God.
In my Sunday School class, we have compiled a list of "No's"- things that we don't believe God would have us do as far as our bodies are concerned:
--Alcohol
--Tobacco products
--Drugs
--Sex (before marriage)
--Gluttony and obesity
--Excessive piercings or tattoos
--Wearing clothing that might cause another to lust
And the list goes on and on. The point is, we have to treat our bodies in a way that would be pleasing to God.
