What does defiling your 'temple' (body) mean?

And with my mural statement, I'm just saying that tattoos can be artistic. I think that they are most of the time. They can hold personal significance, or just be an expression of creativitity. And graffiti is a form of vandalism. I hardly see how anyone can compare the two.
I never said that tattoos aren't artistic. Most of them, in fact, are very artistic. That has nothing whatsoever to do with why I wouldn't want one. If you like them, fine.

Well, then I guess I was a little confused as to why you commented towards my statement. I see why you said I was making a guess. But when you made the statement about Michelangelo and God, I took it that you meant that our inferior creativity should nullify our actions to create.

No, that's definitely not what I meant.

Well, then I have no idea what you were talking about and why you said it.
All I was trying to say was that I don't believe that any kind of art people put on their bodies is an improvement over the unadorned natural skin that God gave us.

16 . Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

To me this means that God is within each of us, and we all have the the potential to connect with Him/Her/It and become divine (in a different way than God) ourselves. :D

You mean like the natural, God-given skin of this baby?

I went to http://www.anvari.org/. Sorry, but I apparently didn't see what you wanted me to see. Look, we evidently don't see eye-to-eye on the subject of tattoos. I don't like them. It's nothing personal, okay?

Agreed. :D But of course, everyone knew we would agree on this subject.:D

Aww...you can't see the picture? It's a baby with tattoos all over it's body. It was meant as a joke to kind of break the ice, but I guess you can't see it.:( And I think I understand you perfectly well. I think you're misreading me though. I'm not taking anything personally at all. I just wanted to understand what you meant by your original comment to me. And once I did, I tried to break the ice with that picture. So much for that idea though.

You know what? Even though I couldn't see the picture, I'm glad you did something to break the ice. It was starting to get kind of thick and I just hate it when that happens! :)

Sorry, I haven't chipped in on this thread yet.

Defiling your 'temple' means just that, to me. Not looking after your body, not taking care of yourself (mentally, spiritually and physically); we are given a physical body with which to 'interact' in this world and ruining it is, basically, ruining the 'life' that God gave us.

I am not going to go into tatoos and piercings; let's just say "It isn't for me".:D

the Mosaic Law forbade God’s people to tattoo themselves.
‘And YOU must not make cuts in YOUR flesh for a deceased soul, and YOU must not put tattoo marking upon yourselves. I am Jehovah........... Leviticus 19;28
While Christians today are not under the Law of Moses, the prohibition it laid on tattooing is sobering.

Tattooing, piercing, and cutting existed in Bible times. They were most often practiced by pagan nations in connection with their religion.

Interesting; what do you think God will think of mentally ill people who cut themselves ?

For me, I think those verses are saying we're supposed to treat our bodies with respect. After all, our bodies are:

a)temporary
b) God's property

Jesus could return tomorrow and it would all be over. A few moments of pleasure from indulging in carnal weakness could cause you an eternity of sorrow. Using products such as alchohol, tobacco, and drugs could cause you an early death-and then you'll have to explain to God why you're standing before Him so soon!

According to 1 Corinthians 6:15-20, our bodies are God's property, and therefore for God's pleasure. Your body isn't for your pleasure. It's not for anyone else's pleasure. Our goal in the body is to be pleasing to God.

In my Sunday School class, we have compiled a list of "No's"- things that we don't believe God would have us do as far as our bodies are concerned:

--Alcohol
--Tobacco products
--Drugs
--Sex (before marriage)
--Gluttony and obesity
--Excessive piercings or tattoos
--Wearing clothing that might cause another to lust

And the list goes on and on. The point is, we have to treat our bodies in a way that would be pleasing to God.

This raises another point, where Jesus says it isn't whats goes into a person that makes him unclean, but what comes out of him.

In that more metaphorical sense, would it be defiling our temple by behaving badly as well?

feel sorry for them no doubt, and i am sure that he has a yearning to put into pratice in his time all the ills of this world. as the bible promises he will.

I just saw this in my e-mail after not visiting this forum for two years.

A few minds might think that x or y might defile a "temple" body, but think of it for a moment. Temples did not have tattoos, but they had decorations and symbols of their own. If a person gets a tattoo and there is an important story, lesson, or person behind it who are we to say it defiles their body? And on smoking and drinking, I'm not sure. Consumption of alcohol isn't always a bad thing, so I don't think we can peg a few actions to be distasteful and others to be pure. As for piercings, again temples have decorations.
