North Korea fired its second missile over Japan; I'm really worried there'll be a war?

I want to go to Japan and South Korea next Spring but Kim's not letting up.

America couldn't even defeat Vietnam; how do they expect to defeat the largest army in the world (1 million active personnel plus another 6 million aka more than China)

North Korea's military

South Korea's military

According to a report by the Council of Foreign Reliations, Congress wants to tighten sanctions, and these missile launches put pressure on Russia and China to participate in an oil embargo. That means we are not going to war.

Historian checking in! Let's remember that in Vietnam the technology between the two factions was relatively equal. Sure, the US had a superior air presence and a pretty solid navy, but if we compare technology that impacted the boots on the ground? Grunts with guns on both sides.

Compared to now? There is a huge disparity between the two military forces. While we could argue that the numbers of Kim and company would be worrisome, my counter is that it won't matter when our gun ships sit 15 miles away taking pot shots whenever the captain is feeling frisky. Or perhaps the most sophisticated drone strikes the world had ever seen, all from a click of a mouse by an air force geek at Langley. In short, we could launch a war from Hawaii before they could even find themselves a boat and paddle to face it.

That said, this war would be terrifying either way and I certainly hope to avoid it.

America couldn't defeat Vietnam? In Vietnam the military stopped taking territory and moving forward to take more territory. Instead it tried to fight a war of attrition and only lost because the people of the US had enough.

Hopefully we learned from that. What happened to Iraq? Twice?

The North Korean military has 30-40 year old equipment. They don't have night vision. They have to manually aim and reload their equipment. They don't have any anti-armor helicopters. They have to use tanks to defeat tanks and our tanks are better and the South Korean tanks are essentially a copy of ours.

The north also doesn't have any effective drone aircraft or stealth aircraft. I doubt they have the fuel or food reserves to fight a prolonged conflict. I also doubt that they have the ability to make a nuclear weapon small enough to fit inside one of their bomber aircraft or atop a ballistic missile but no one outside of the North Korean leadership knows for sure.

The US has 28,000 military in South Korea and South Korea has about a 500,000 strong military and they can call up another 400,000 reserves.

The only problem is a sneak attack by the north that would really mess things up for a while until we knocked them down but other than that the north can't win.

Kim Dong Dil isn't going to start a war because that would get him killed. We have a cruise missile with his name on it.

I didn't look at the first video, but the second one had a song which was extremely boring and vacuous. Nonetheless, I kept watching just the same.

I'm not sure what's going to happen with North Korea. I don't think they're planning on starting any wars, although they seem to be afraid that we might attack them and they're trying to show everyone how tough they are. Whatever we do, we should try to work in cooperation with Russia and China, since North Korea is right at their doorstep.

I remember walking through a neighborhood one time, and I came across the funniest scene as there was this fenced yard which had two strong, mean-looking huskies, along with one dachshund - all of them barking furiously. I was wary of the huskies, but watching the dachshund there barking with all his might was rather amusing. To me, North Korea is like that dachshund. The only reason they can bark so loud is because they're right next to those big huskies who can tear a person to shreds.

North Korea might figure more prominently if things start heating up between the major powers.

We beat the snot out of the Vietnamese albiet at at high cost.

The only reason why they "won"was because we pulled out.

There's a big difference between the amount of personnel and the level of respective technology. North Korea is not a true national threat although we shouldn't underestimate them.

That said we should do something before they become a true national threat which is why regime change seems to be the foremost thing on people's minds in dealing with Kimmy.

North Korea has less than 10 nukes but 10 nukes are all you need to level Tokyo and Seoul :(

One nuclear weapon would almost completely destroy any city. The ones used in WW2 on Japan were 15 and 20 kilotons, the one North Korea recently tested was 250 kilotons.

No one knows what Kim Dong Dil is going to do but if he uses nuclear weapons we will retaliate with nuclear weapons and we have thousands of them and ours are more accurate. He has to know that he would be nuked. I just don't see him starting any war because he's the king of his country, he can do whatever he wants and no one is going to do anything about it until he goes too far.

Exploding a nuclear device under ground is one thing, you can make the device large. Making it small enough to be carried by a bomber aircraft is a another level up in technology and being able to place it on top of a missile and have it deploy and work is also another level or two up in technology.

The only bomber aircraft that North Korea has is the Ilyushin-28 they got from the Soviet Union. The aircraft is from the 50's and not very large so it probably can't carry any nuclear device the North Korean's have.

The media and the US military sometimes exaggerate things because they know most people don't have a strong science background and the more scared you are the more ratings and more money the military can ask for.

Kim made a speech saying he will not be swayed by the sanctions

America will not make a full amphibious assault . It is highly unlikely . They are only gonna provide cover fire / logistics support to advancing south korean armour .
Once the US has committed the initial strike against North Korea, how does Kim Jong-un respond?

Even with its nuclear facilities in ashes and the majority of their command and control destroyed "North Korea has a lot of options. "They have their massive, massive conventional artillery options that can start firing at South Korea in a split second.. The civilian losses would be pretty high even if US wins.

America will not make a full amphibious assault? I did not say they would but we don't have to. We can drive up the main highways.

We are only going to provide cover fire and logistics to south korean armor? Possible but doubtful that our tanks would not be involved at all.

Once the US has committed the initial strike against North Korea how does Kim respond? I hope Trump doesn't commit that initial strike. There are too many unknowns. If the north does have a nuclear bomb small enough to fit into one of their bombers, I doubt it but they could, then all the the north's bombers have to be taken out in the initial strike. It's possible to do that. The position of the north's bombers would be known before the strike by satellite so fifteen or so stealth bombers would drop GPS bombs on them and hit known SAM sites then attack helicopters from the south would fly up and destroy any fighters on the airfields. At the same time the tanks would be driving north. They could be in Pyongyang in two hours.

Kim would respond by telling his military to fight but they have a lack of information on the military capabilities of the US and South Korea. The North Korean generals don't know what we can do. We know where their bunkers in the mountains are with missiles. We can take them out with bunker buster bombs. Other than a nuclear bomb the North Korean artillery is the next biggest problem. It would take time for the US aircraft to find and hit them all and they could destroy Seoul in about an hour or two.

I think the only thing that North Korea can hope for is for tensions between the United States and Russia to heat up - and/or possibly China getting in the mix. We have to be a bit careful in how we proceed, since it's not just North Korea's arsenal we have to worry about. We'd be making war right on China's and Russia's doorstep. That's the only thing that really keeps North Korea in business.

As for North Korea itself, they've been gearing up for a US invasion for generations. This is all that they've lived and existed for, with the entire population essentially drafted to make the entire country into one big military camp.

America knocked the snot out of Vietnam.

We would have certainly won had it not been for the politically-motivated pull out.

The Vietcong were decimated.

Anyways our technology has far gone beyond the capabilities of what we had in Vietnam.

Larger doesn't mean better either.
