They look like people who are about to lose much what has been an important part of their lives. Let them have their last enjoyment before reality kicks in.

Apparently this happened in Oregon. LOOK: As fires ravage Oregon, golfers play on in absolutely stunning photos

"I got out and I started taking pictures," McCluer told Fortune. "I thought, 'This is a good spot, nobody else is around, it wasn't crowded, there were only two or three other cars and some people golfing.'"

"The golfers and I were not actually in any danger," says McCluer. "When I was done taking pictures, I walked over to them and we talked about how crazy and surreal and horrifying this event is, but I didn't get their names or have any real interaction with them. It was just a few words exchanged."

But yes, it's good symbolism for America's state of affairs these days. It's just like fiddling while Rome burns.

Is there a difference between playing on the golf course and playing at Religious Forum? I know there was love in all those witty responses but veiled.

that's probably because people empathised with the golfers more than I anticipated.

These fires are actually serious business. I was reading about the Eagle Creek Fire, which has burned over 30,000 acres this past week and is only 7% contained. They say it was human-caused, but I'm not sure what exactly happened.

Oregon fires: Latest from Chetco Bar Fire, Eagle Creek Fire, Whitewater Fire and more

There's an even bigger fire, the Chetco Bar Fire, which has burned 177,000 acres since July and is only 5% contained.

I salute the thousands of firefighters out there.

What they need is some heavy rain. One end of the country gets too much rain that they flood, while the other end of the country is parched, dry, and going up in smoke.

"The Zombies are coming!"

"Great, let's torch the hill and practice hitting them in the head."

"You mean hit golf balls?"

"Aim for the flag, not the hole."

"I don't see why we just can't use the clubs. What if we run outta balls?"

"WE AIN'T GONNA RUN OUTTA BALLS!"

"I ran outta the balls to fight these things a while back already."

Though getting me out onto a golf course under ideal conditions would prove to be a stretch, I simply cannot imagine going to one with a wild fire nearby. What could possibly go wrong?

I started thinking about what I'd do if I knew with total certainty that the world was about to end. It would not be playing golf. But that might be the subject of another thread.

I did a bit of checking, and the golf course in question is actually in Washington, just north of the Columbia River. The fire is on the Oregon side of the river, so I would think the river would prevent it from spreading into Washington. But there are other fires in Washington as well.
