Would such a movie appeal to a mainstream audience?

Would a space opera set in a future version of our universe where Earth, humanity, and the U.S. Military exists and with a humanity that has united under freedom and democracy rather than a fantasy space universe like Star Wars appeal to a mainstream audience or would the average movie goer think such a future is ridiculous since they think humanity would destroy itself or Jesus would come back before humanity becomes an interstellar civilization?

Considering how much Americans love the military I think the average American movie goer would love Commander Shepard who is basically an American soldier with a cool spaceship!

As a general rule of thumb, sci fi very rarely hardly ever appeals to mainstream audiences. This is more-so for a video game-to-movie.

If the earth and humanity have united (presumably freely and democratically), why would they have a U.S. Military?

While Star Wars has been more successful at the box office than Star Trek, I would say both have appeal to mainstream audiences.

or would the average movie goer think such a future is ridiculous since they think humanity would destroy itself or Jesus would come back before humanity becomes an interstellar civilization?
Or? You're setting up a false dichotomy.

It could be utterly ridiculous -and- have mainstream appeal.

Edit...
I just watched the trailers/clips you posted. It would make an incredibly boring movie. Interesting stories require compelling protagonists (flaws are a requirement) and good dialogue. Mass Effect (as you portrayed it) lacks both.

I’m not sure what your point is to be honest. There will have been plenty of films and stories in other media with those kind of elements as a basis but all of that is relatively unimportant background. The actual story built upon it would be most significant to the appeal and success of a film.

It is relevant that stories generally require some kind of conflict. Having a starting point of a society that is all happy and perfect doesn’t help with that which is why so much sci-fi and fantasy has dystopic or flawed social structures. Also, while I wouldn’t go as far as you suggest, I do think there is an element of believability involved in world building and presenting something apparently perfect and flawless does risk jarring with audiences basic knowledge of logical and human nature.

Considering how much Americans love the military I think the average American movie goer would love Commander Shepard who is basically an American soldier with a cool spaceship!{/quote]That’s really a separate element from your first one but that one is certainly the case and has been the basis for loads of sci-fi stories. Again though, it is only the basis, with the actual quality and success depending on a whole load of other elements.
