in orthodox christianity only the Holy Trinity is real. Ra, Zeus, Odin etc are fake gods according to christians.
There was this guy named Abraham. He smashed a bunch of idols except for one. When the people of his town accused him of blasphemy he challenged the one remaining idol, if it was truly a god, to reveal the identity of the one who smashed the other idols, since the one remaining idol was the only witness to the deed.
When the idol was unable to communicate and give testimony of its witness of Abraham's actions, Abraham concluded this idol was a false god, and was really just a statue.
That's probably not the first instance, but it is one of the early ones.

From Christianity and later Islaam, I gather.
Proselitistic monotheisms have a motivation for "denouncing" the deities of other faiths.
Edited to add: and that motivation is rare elsewhere. Polytheists rarely if ever take issue on how "genuine" other people's deities are. Atheists, almost by definition, don't believe in true deities. Pantheists, panentheists and deists don't seem to bother to denounce any deities either. Even henotheists such as many Hindus seem to be remarkably uninterested in calling any deities "fake".

Only religion could produce martyrs for a rapist.

in india we worship rocks too ..if ure a professional idol smasher you still won't win coz we can worship the broken stones and each stone become a new god + to the existing pool.. 1 stone /rock with tilak ( saffron line ) = god = small temple. we worship whole mountains too..try smashing that.

Basically doesn't change the point of the idol-smasher. He thought any god that didn't directly speak to him was false, because, in his eyes, any valid god should be able to do something as basic as speaking.

the light of god can be seen on any object , be it stone , on a person's head or a tree farm..anywhere..it works for us ..the stones don't talk back and we knew this before islam came into being..so if you tell a hindu stones don't speak = not god..he will say ok , ty come again.rather than discarding a hindu as dumb wit one needs to understand how can a normal human consider a stone as god even tho he knows it was painted and sculpted 2 blocks from the temple. we know what a stone can or cannot do. still chose to worship it ..and nobody can stop us..no matter how many necks you slit ..or pressure and seduce us to eat beef. something works it works..doesn't work for you then keep trying hard on your way.

I didn't endorse the actions or reasoning, merely mentioned them as an example of the OP. It almost seems like you think I endorsed the position and are trying to debate it, otherwise you're debating a dead man. Either way, I'm not sure what the point is here.
