How do you know which deities are right for you?

How do you know which deity is right for you? Are there signs or visions that give clues? How did you find out that your deity or deities were right for you and your beliefs?

I only make deities when they work for me.

Yes, I can create deities. No, I do not believe in their independent existence. It is possible that my neurological situation is not conducive to theism.

Well if I could recommend anything, It'd be to disregard the idea that God is supposed to suit you and for some reason meet your personal standards.

As a pagan, I naturally accept the existence of any deity who has been widely experience by others. Why did I choose the Hellenic gods rather than, say, the Egyptian or Indian ones? Like most decisions, it was a mixture of the culture I'd been brought up on and gut instinct. My final decision was prompted by a series of repeated and graphic dreams which I interpreted as a sign that I needed to get off the fence: when I did, they stopped. Once I started worshiping the gods, then I noticed things: nothing flashy, just subtle hints that they were aware of me and also the answering of prayers, like one to Athena for a Conservative majority government!

Vanakkam,

Just didn't choose. Basically came out of nowhere like "it's Me, 'sup?"

Approaching the ten years of relationship now. We're still impossible to separate.

Became a strong atheist and embraced all deities of my culture and have kept the door open for those whom I do not know yet.

Research a lot, pray to them all, have contemplative meditation. See which one you evoke most, feel more connected to, and don't forget you can work with many deities at once, not just commit yourself to only one.

Currently I work with Jesus, Diana, and Kali. I vibe with them well. :) I tried to find a homogenous pantheon at first such as Hellenic or Celtic but I felt like I was boxing myself in and so when I listened to my heart it was saying it was ok to be eclectic and that it's the better approach for me.

I did the exact same thing when I prayed to Brigantia (who may be the same deity as Athena) on 9 November and she delivered the exact same thing.

As to the question, it's my natural instinct. I naturally gravitate towards the Celtic gods because they are my blood and I, as a descendant of the ancient Celts, am by extension a descendant of the Celtic god of the underworld.

I also pray to many foreign gods as well, but I pick out particular ones based on feelings.
