KJV translated the word Gehenna as hellfire. Gehenna was just a garbage pit where things were destroyed.
Both Jesus and the old Hebrew Scriptures teach unconscious ' sleep ' in death according to John 11:11-14; Psalms 115:17; Psalms 146:4; Ecclesiastes 9:5, so the joke is on people who believe in the ' fly or fry ' teaching instead of a peaceful sleep (Not knowing the passing of time) until they are resurrected during Jesus' coming 1,000-year rule over Earth.
