Little known gods & goddesses

Recently I created a thread about Namagiri Devi.
I'm curious to know more about gods & goddesses that are well known to the local people but unkown to anybody else.
When you read about Hinduism you of course get to know Vishnu, Lakshmi, Ganesha, Durga, Shiva and Krishna.
But such deities as Namagiri Devi or Ayyapan you won't find in books.
For those of you who are from India or have travelled there: Can you give some more examples of little known gods & goddesses?

Not possible. Take Indian citizenship and start on you quest. This will take a long time. India has 833 million people living in 640,867 villages. :)

Khandoba is male.

Osian is near my hometown, Jodhpur in Rajasthan. It has a beautiful sun-temple and jain temples. At one time, my grandfather was responsible for looking after the sun-temple being the head of the Archaeology department of Jodhpur state. Chakreshwari is the Jain equivalent of Durga combining the three aspects, Mahalakshmi, Mahasaraswati, Mahagauri - Sashandevi (one who rules) Chakreshwari (the Supreme Empress) Osiya Maa Saraswatimata Ambika. She is also known as 'Sachia Mata' - the True Mother.

"Osian sun temple" - Google Search

Chakreshwari (derived like Chakravarti to mean the Supreme Empress) is also the family deity of the earstwhile Rathore rulers of Bikaner. Her common name is Naganechi mata or Nagnechi ji and her temple is located in Nagana village. Jains probably picked up the Chakreshwari name from there.

The Hindu temples are smaller, older, many in dilapidated condition. Hindu devotees may have moved to newer temples. They do not really need ostentatious temples for their worship. The Jain temples have been looked after and enlarged.

Difficult to know all Gods and Goddesses that Hindus worship. Here is another example: Jai Sundha Mata: Seven Sisters

Vanakkam,

Chakreshwari looks a lot like Sri manasa devi/Naagdevi, is there a link somewhere ?

Also it is an impossible quest :D every village have it's own devi, every family have its own devi... Every hindu have it's own devi !

It's like you're trying to know all the moms of everyone in India !
Am impressed ! XD

I think that's the beauty of Hinduism - only when attending the temple (northern style) did I get to meet some of the devas who I have never met before

I think that's one thing I love about hinduism is that fact that the different temples I visit also worship the local deities from their home villages. One God who I now have in my puja area is Vachraji Dada and Maa Kyodiar
