Is it because of the Jewish prohibition against spelling the name or title of the deity in full? If so, why is frowned upon?

Hi,

It is out of respect of the name of G-d. If the name of the Holy One is written, then where it was written may get abused. For example, if it were written or printed on paper and the paper falls down to the ground, then it is a mark of disrespect. Hence, to avoid such accidents, the name of the Holy One is not written in its entire form.

Another reason is that one of the primary tenets of Judaism is to worship no idols. While writing out God's name is a pretty far cry from making an idol, it still could be worshipped which would be wrong. However, this is really just my interpretation. If I find a more reputable source, I'll write back with the full citation....

There is a prohibition on erasing or defacing the name of G-d that comes from Deut. 12:3. It is not a prohibition on writing the name of G-d but many observant Jews avoid writing His name out for fear of it being erased or defaced. It's just being safe than sorry ya know?
