Will Trump destroy the Republican Party? If he does, I think the destruction will most likely take the form of a split in the Party that leaves both parts too much in the minority to win most elections. What do you think? Will Trump destroy the Republican Party?

No, because after Trump has served his 8 years the choice is the same, Republican or Democrat.

I'm going to keep this saved for when Trump is either impeached or fails his bid for a second term. If you genuinely think Captain Suntan is going to serve two terms, I have a bridge in New York I'd like to sell you.

No, because most Trump supporters will not blame themselves for their catastrophic error in judgment. They will blame Trump and back other Republicans in the future, hopefully ones of greater mental stability. We have a two-party system. That will not change unless we reform our method of electing government officials. We need to guarantee election with majorities, not pluralities.

The republican party has had a problem for some time now. The tea party and Trump are its symptoms. Eventually it is going to have to break into 2 parties Trump has probably accelerated the breakup.

I don't think so. So long as Democrats demonize opponents, Republicans will remain. By the same token, if the Republicans continue to demonize their opponents. Democrats will remain.

I doubt it. Both major political parties are far too entrenched and resilient, and have a history of bouncing back when all seemed lost. The Democratic Party was in a pretty rough situation during the period from the Civil War up until WW1. Then, after the Great Depression hit, the Republicans were blamed and then they started to hit the skids. FDR and the Democrats enjoyed a majority which allowed them to bring about enormous and wide-reaching reforms, both in terms of domestic and foreign policy. The old guard Republicans were washed out, and the GOP had to reinvent itself to gain a resurgence in the 50s. They also gained from the internal divisions within the Democratic Party, namely the old guard Southern Democrats who were also falling by the wayside. There was also a split between the hawkish pro-war Democrats and the anti-war Democrats which caused a virtual implosion at the '68 convention and led to Nixon's victory that same year.

And then, after the fall of Nixon, I thought that the Democrats would then retake control, which they did when Carter won in '76 and the Democrats won both houses of Congress. But Carter only just barely won, and once he was in, he was hampered mainly by continuing squabbles within his own party. Ted Kennedy was kind of a ringleader among those constantly ragging Carter and weakening his presidency, paving the way for Reagan's victory in 1980 and a GOP-controlled White House for the next 12 years.

So, to answer your question, even if Trump manages to destroy the Republican Party, the Democrats will most certainly find a way to inadvertently build the Republicans up again. The Democrats will likely squabble even more, especially if the GOP is destroyed and a lot of displaced registered voters end up looking for a new party to join.

I only pray that he can fulfill my wet dream. Nothing makes me more erotically stimulated than walking over the charred politicians of the GOP and blowing the ashes of what is left of FOX news. But I can only dream

Nope. Trump is much too mediocre to yield anything approaching that level of power.

It is the Republican Party that is destroying itself, albeit in a painfully slow agony.

It seems to me that both voters and politicians that have any sympathy for the Republican Party have been much too scared of that possibility to allow it to happen. While that is certainly the direction things are going towards right now, I don't expect that last.

If Republicans had any significant defenses against the Sunk Cost Fallacy, Trump would not have been elected to begin with. Because they do not, they will just keep damaging America time and again until the pain becomes too crippling to ignore. A few will of course learn better during those painful decades, but the Party would not have survived to this day in its present form if it had any ability to learn better.

What I am hoping for is a significant backlash against the de facto bipartidarism, spurred by the realization that even for those most passionately opposed to the Democrats there are no good news to be found in the Republicans. GWB got excused on the grounds of "national security needs", and Obama was an excuse since then. No longer.

It would not surprise me to see the emergence of some form of third choice, largely (and gradually) built of the remains of the Republicans as it becomes increasingly harder to maintain their current narrative of victimism.

No. President Pence and the current majorities in Congress will do it by screwing old people, non-whites, young, sick along with destroying American scientific research in favor of political correctness and so forth.

I expect Trump will quit or be impeached before his first term is over. Even Nixon could not destroy the Republican Party.

I think Trump has already destroyed the fallacy of Rep or Dem only. If truth be known many Trump voters were sick of being dictated to concerning who they had to vote for. I, for one, am not affiliated with any party and I am totally happy with the garment renting and teeth gnashing from both sides of the aisle.
