Imam Sadiq (as) said to Unwan Al-Basri, ‘[Mystical] Knowledge is not obtained by learning. Rather, it is a light which enters the heart of whoever God, the Blessed and Exalted, wishes to guide. So if you want the knowledge, first find in yourself the reality of the devotion to God. Seek knowledge by utilising it and ask God to make you understand, then He will make you understand.’

Qualities of the mystic seeker of the way towards God

Imam Ali(a.s.) siad,

'He (the seeker) kept his intellect alive and killed (the improper desires of) his soul, till his bulk turned light, and his rude turned gentle, and then an effulgence of extreme brightness shone for him. So, it lighted the way for him and took him on the right path( towards God ). Different doors (one after each othe), led him to the door of peace and the place of (his permanent) stay. His feet, balancing his body became fixed in the position of safety and comfort, because he kept his heart (in good acts and beliefs) and pleased his Lord.'

Nahjul Balaqa, Sermon 219

Prophet Muhammad( peace be upon him and his pure progeny ) said,

“Verily, had not the Satans hovered around the hearts of the offspring of Adam, they would have been able to see towards the reality of the heavens and the earth.“

A part of Al-Sha'baniyya Supplication, which was/is the Supplication of all 12 infallible Imams( peace be upon them ) in Sha'ban month,

O My God! Grant me to be exclusively dedicated to You. Light the eyes of our hearts with the light of looking at You, until the eyes of the hearts penetrate through the partitions of light so as to reach the origin of greatness, and our souls become hanging onto the glory of Your Sanctity.

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said,

“The worshipers of Allah are three groups:
1.A group worships Allah – the Mighty and Sublime – out of fear; this is the worship of slaves.
2.Another group worships Allah – the Mighty and Sublime – out of desire for reward; this is the worship of wage earners.
3.Still another group worships Allah – the Mighty and Sublime – out of love for Him; this is the worship of free men, and it is the best worship.

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said:
‘Allah Mighty and Majestic, when He intends goodness with a servant, imprints a white spot in his/her heart and opens the ears of his/her heart, and allocates an Angel with him/her guiding him/her; and when He intends evil with a servant, imprints a black spot in his/her heart, and shuts the ears of his/her heart, and allocates a Satan with him/her leading him/her astray’.

Have you ever read the Ihya ulum al-din?

It's 40 books, I have some. It's like the Muslim Zohar. More accurately the Zohar is the Jewish Ihya.

Ghazali, God be pleased with him, is called the "Proof of Islam."

Salamun Alaykum brother!

No. I haven't. I have read Al-Mhajjatul Baydha fi Tahzib Al-Ihya (المحجة البيضاء في تهذيب الاحياء) by Allama Feydh Al-Kashani (RA).

Allama Al-Kashani has reviewed the book of Ghazali and rewritten it based on the school of Ahlul Bayt (peace be upon them). He says in his book that he has found the book of Ghazali as a good book, but because there are matters in it which don't agree with the school of Ahlul Bayt (peace be upon them), he has rewritten it for the followers of Ahlul Bayt (peace be upon them).

Allah bless you!

I am absolutely in love with the writings of Ghazali so I honestly can't say I approve of it being rewritten but I am happy as long as I have the original, I have found many Sunnah which have inspired me to serve Allah such as "Knowledge is obligatory on all Muslims for without it the Word of God can be of no benefit" which if you have ever heard a non Muslim try and interpret the Qur'an you know without knowledge it is easily misinterpreted, to us it as well as the Christian scripture are clear as day. I even read Zohar without issue, it explains the Torah in the right way, IMO.

But that must have been a task, rewriting 40 books? How was that received in the various communities of Islamic thought?

Dear brother, as Prophet Muhammad (sawaws) said, he (sawaws) left among Muslims, two things to which if we hold fast, we shall not be misguided after him (sawaws). They are 1.Quran, 2.his Ahlul Bayt and progeny. Indeed, only these are infallible whom must be followed. Others are fallible people whose sayings are not proof for us exept that they agree with the sayings of Allah in Quran and sayings of His Messenger (sawaws) and the 12 infallible Imams (as) from the progeny of the Messenger of Allah (sawaws).

But, the original book of Ghazali is not out of my access. I can easily buy it. But, I believe that it is for scholars who can judge about the sayings of Ghazali whether they agree the sayings of the Proofs of Allah or not. So, because I am not a scholar, I do not study that book, instead I read the book which is cleand by a eminent Shia scholar who was full familiar with the sayings of both Quran and Ahlul Bayt (as).

Best wishes!

Thanks brother, I never stated and Ghazali himself would rebuke me if I did, that Ghazali was on par with Sunnah and Qur'an, if that is where you are going.

Mohammed (s) said "Seek knowledge, even in China" but not "let the scholars decide what is knowledge."

Scholars of Islam are multiple in category and they have legal scholars, Hadith scholars, religous scholars, etc.

But I do my own reading and deciding, the early Muslims became great because they put Qur'an and Hadiths first and didn't reject foreign wisdom, knowledge.

They studied Greek philosophy and science and Indian mathematics and invented modern science, not by letting scholars decide what is what but by being pioneers and obeying the Sunnah that makes knowledge incumbent, in one form or another, incumbent upon Muslims and went above and beyond.

Besides the scholars have spoken already and Ghazali is called "Proof of Islam."

Which requires no further explanation. But Ghazali also said one should not undertake the Sufi path before mastering Hadiths first, or quoted another author, so I am well aware that one doesn't elevate non sacred works to sacred status on par with Qur'an.

I also know it is foolish to only study one book and another series your whole life and nothing else.

I read everything, Jewish, Christian, Apocryphal and philosophical, Gnostic, everything.

Nothing is greater than the Qur'an though.

Salaam!

1.Brother, I read the books of those Shia scholars who are expert in many fields, such as Quranic science, Hadith sciences (Hadiths of Prophet and infallible Imams, peace be upon them all), philosophy (Islamic, Iranian, greek, and other ones), theoretical and practical gnosis, mathematics, etc.
When I say scholar, I mean a scholar who is expert in many fields. I do not mean ordinary ones. For example see, Hassan Hasanzadeh Amoli - Wikipedia

2.I never reject foreign wisdom and knowledge, I reject what is against Quran and authentic Hadiths of Prophet (sawaws) and 12 infallible Imams (as).
Yes. Prophet Muhammad (sawaws) said that we should seek knowledge, even in China. In addition, Imam Ali (as) said: "Take wisdom from wherever it may be". Or he (as) said:""Receive wisdom from anybody who offers it to you. Look at what one said, not at who said it".

But brother, Prophet has also said: "I am the city of knowledge and Ali is its gate; whoever intends to enter the city should come to its gate".
Or he (sawaws) said that we must only follow Quran and Ahlul Bayt (as).

So, I do not accept the sayings which do not agree Quran and the authentic sayings of Prophet (sawaws) and his Ahlul Bayt (as). I reject them.

3.You say that Ghazali is called the Proof of Islam, while he was the enemy of philosophy in his time. His enmity against the philosophy of his time ( Greek and Mashsha philosophy) is famous and you can see it in his books.

Waffaqakallah!

Yes, Ghazali IS called the "Proof of Islam."

And yes, he did write against CERTAIN philsophers for specific reasons, until I read those books all I can say is his problem was not with philosophy or philosophers, he was a philosopher, as he saw it they were letting foreign philosophy influence Islam in ways that were not proper and he addressed it.

His philosophy, I have Vols. 1,2 & 9, is Islamic Sufism, he uses Sunnahs and the Qur'an on almost every page and from what I have read never approaches anything close to going against the Qur'an, Hadiths or Sharia.

That said, I am waiting for the full 40 volume Ihya ulum al-din currently to arrive in the mail. It's 3,000 pages worth of "Proof of Islam."

No dear brother, you never upseted me. I did not upset.

I am not going to force you accepting my saying, but dear brother, I do not believe that Ghazali was the Proof of Islam. Yes, he was a eminent Sunni scholar whose sayings are accepted as long as they do not disagree with Quran, Al-Aql (Intellect), authentic Hadiths of Prophet (sawaws) and his Ahlul Bayt (as) and fixed sceientific facts which are not doubted.

The following is the saying of Imam Sibt ibn Al-Jowzi, one the most eminent Sunni Imam of Hadith, about the book Ihya Al-Uloom Al-din by Al-Ghazali. This is not the saying of a Shia scholar, this is the saying of one of the most eminent Sunni Imam of Hadith:

وجاء أبو حامد الغزالي فصنف لهم كتاب "الإحياء" على طريقة القوم، وملأه بالأحاديث الباطلة، وهو لا يعلم بطلانها

And Abu Hamid Al-Ghazali wrote for them (Sufis) the "Al-Ihya" book based on the way and manner of this group (Sufis), and filled the book with the fake Hadiths while he was not awar of their incorrectness.
(Talbis Al-Iblis, P 160)

You may know that the Hadiths which are mentioned in Al-Ihya do not have a route of the narrators. Sibt ibn Al-Jowzi says that there are many fake Hadiths in it because of ignorance of the author about the Hadiths.

Waffaqakallah [وفقك الله, i.e., May Allah grant you success]!

Salaam. You are obviously free to have your opinion about Al-Ghazali, I think you are taking the epithet "Proof of Islam" that was bestowed upon him too literally.

It is not often you find someone with the ability to revive "Religous Sciences" and in 4 sections totalling 40 books/subjects Al-Ghazali contributed a great deal to doing so based on Islam, without borrowing from Aristotle or Plotinus, Plato, etc.

He was also not a hyper Mystic, he is rational in his approach to anything mystical in nature and always uses Qur'an, Sunnahs, Bukhari and Muslim, other sources and sayings of the Companions (p) and never deviates.

Knowledge, Creed, Prayer, these are the three I have until I get the whole set. But I have read enough to be able to tell I am going to learn a lot more from this great man.

The Qur'an is the Proof of Islam, a true Miracle easily proven by the just society that emerged from it, the diplomatic way the Islamic Empire was established and the tolerant "Kingdom of God" it was unlike the one of Rome that was the death of the true message of the Messiah (p).

Ghazali is just a man who proves what a Miracle the Qur'an and Islam are, not the only one to do so by any means.

It is just a great honor bestowed upon a great man. May he be blessed.

I won't lie, it offends me that anyone would ever rewrite someone else's books, you are not supposed to do that, it is not honorable.

They should write a refutation if they find flaws with the works of Ghazali, not "fix" them and sell them as either his or theirs, it's neither.

Unless you meant abridged, that is understandable, it is a large work and that is fine if it is known to the buyer.

So that is why I said what I said about scholars deciding what is what and tampering with people's works.

Because no honest scholars would ever do that, out of honor and respect for what the man wrote so long ago and dedicated so much time to.

It's just wrong. It is not a comparison but imagine if someone rewrote the Qur'an??

Obviously Ghazali is not comparable to the Qur'an, but the same policy should apply to all ancient writings about religion from any author. Any important book.

Like I said and as Ghazali did when he had an issue, they should write a refutation if his work is flawed.

Dear brother, I respect your belief, but I do not accept it. I do not believe that Al-Ghazali was an infallible person. Your saying implies such this belief. Only Quran, Prophet and his 12 Successors and Lady Fatima are infallible and only they are the True Proofs of Allah. I can prove this by Quran and the authentic Hadiths of Prophet Muhammad in Sunni books. But the infallibility of Al-Ghazali is not proved for me, rather, its contrary is proved for me.

Dear brother, if you believe in his infallibility and you have your evidences, go ahead. But I do not let myself to say to a person that rewrinting of the book of Al-Ghazali is somehow like the rewriting the Miracle of Prophet, the Words of Almighty Allah (Jalla Jalaloh), The Book of Allah (Azoma Sha'noh), The Revelation of Allah to the heart of Prophet (s) by Gabriel (as).

I should say that even the book Tahzib Al-Ihya by Allama Feydh itself is not a error-free book. It also incloudes mistakes, weak Hadiths, etc.

Was-Salam.

From Al-Kafi, I'm gonna need to put together a specific list or something........

Here's a related Hadith to the one above, Sufi letterism tends to interest me a lot:

Muhammad ibn Yahya from Ahmad ibn Muhammad from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id and
Muhammad ibn Khalid from Zakariyya ibn 'Imran al-Qummi from Harun ibn al-Juhm that a
man from the companions of abu 'Abdallah (a.s.). I (Harun ibn al-Jahm) have forgotten his
name. He has said that he heard Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (a.s.) say the following.

"Two letters were given to Jesus and he would work with them. Four letters were given to Moses. Eight letters were given to Abraham. Fifteen letters were given to Noah. Twenty five letters were given to Adam. Allah, the Most Holy, the Most High, have combined all of them in Muhammad (s.a.).
The greatest name of Allah has seventy three letters. Seventy two letters are given to
Muhammad (s.a.) and only one letter is kept hidden from him."

Imam Ali (pbuh) from the Ghurar al-Hikam:

"Indeed this world is like a net that becomes twisted around the one who desires it and
retreats from the one who turns away from it, so don’t incline towards it with your heart
and do not turn to face it such that it catches you in its net and flings you into its
destruction."

Another one from Imam Ali (pbuh) from the Ghurar al-Hikam:

"The Qur’an: It is a light for one who seeks illumination by it, a witness for
one who disputes with it, a success for one who argues by it, knowledge for one who is
attentive and a judgment for one who judges."

Here's two more from Al-Kafi:

Muhammad ibn Yahya has narrated from Muhammad ibn al-Husayn from Ahmad ibn abu
Nasr from Hassan al-Jammal who has said that Hashim ibn abu ‘Ammara al-Janbi reported to
him this.
"I heard Imam Ali (a.s.) saying, ‘I am the eyes of Allah. I am the hands
of Allah. I am the sides of Allah. I am the door to Allah."

Muhammad ibn abu ‘Abdallah in a marfu‘ manner has narrated from Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq who has said the following.

"O son of Adam, if a bird were to feed upon your heart, it would not satisfy its hunger. Only
the eye of a needle, if placed over your eye, would be totally cover your vision. With such
(insignificant) means of perception how would you comprehend (Allah's) vast dominion over
the earth and the heavens? And if you think you can do so, there is the sun, one of creatures of
Allah. If your eyes can see the sun fully you then may think that you are right."

Really beautiful Hadith from Al-Kafi:

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from al-Hassan ibn Ali from Karram
from ibn abu Ya’fur from abu ‘Abd Allah, recipient of divine supreme covenant,
who has said the following:
“O Lord, fill my heart with love for You, concern about You,
affirmation of and belief in Your existence, fear from You and
longing toward You, O Glorious, O Magnanimous. O Lord,
make me love meeting You, and such meeting to be good,
mercy, and full of blessings, join me with the virtuous and do
not leave me behind with the wicked ones. Join me with the
virtuous of the past and those to come, lead me on the path of
virtuous ones, assist me against my soul by that with which You
assist the virtuous ones against their souls, do not turn me in the
evil from which You want to rescue me, O Lord of the worlds. I
plead before You for a belief free of timing before meeting You,
with which You will keep me living, cause me to die, and raise
me up with it when You will resurrect me. Free my heart from
showing off, desire for popularity, and doubt in Your religion.
“O Lord, give me victory in Your religion, energy to worship,
understanding of Your creatures, support me twice with Your
kindness (in this life and hereafter), brighten my face with Your
light, make me interested in what is with You, cause me to die in
Your way and in Your religion, the religion of Your Messenger.
“O Lord, I seek protection against laziness, old age, cowardice,
stinginess, carelessness, hardheartedness, weakness, and
destitution. I seek protection with You, O Lord against a soul
that does not become satisfied, the heart that does not become
humble, the supplication that is not heard, and the prayer
(formal) that does not yield any benefit. I seek protection with
You for myself, my family, and my children against condemned
Satan.
“O Lord, no one can protect me against You, I do not find any
place to hide from You, do not humiliate me and do not throw
me in perdition and in torment. I plead before You to keep me to
remain steadfast in Your religion, affirm Your book, and follow
Your messenger.
“O Lord, speak of me with Your mercy and do not speak of me
with my sins, accept from me (my good deeds), increase for me
from Your generosity; I am interested toward You. O Lord,
make my reward for speaking and sitting to be Your happiness
with me, make my deeds and supplication purely for You, make
my reward paradise through Your mercy, place me together with
all I pleaded for before You and increase for me through Your
favor; I am greatly interested toward You. O Lord, the stars have
disappeared, eyes have gone to sleep, You are living and
guarding, the dark night cannot disappear from You nor the
starry skies or the well-stretched earth, the choppy ocean, or the
darkness upon darkness. You send mercy upon whomever You
will among Your creatures; You know the secret glance of the
eyes and what the hearts conceal. I testify to what You have
testified for yourself, to what Your angels have testified, and
people of knowledge have testified that no one deserves to be
worshipped except You, the Majestic, the Wise. Whoever does
not testify to what You have testified for yourself, Your angels
have testified, and people of knowledge have testified, then
write my testimony in place of their testimony. O Lord, You are
the Peace, and from You is peace. I plead before You, O the
Owner of glory and magnanimity to set my neck free of the
fire.’”

Ali ibn Ibrahim has narrated from his father from ibn abu ‘Umayr from certain
individuals of his people from abu ‘Abd Allah, recipient of divine supreme
covenant, who has said the following:
“My father would say, ‘In the heart of every believing servant
(of Allah) there are two lights. There is the light of fear and the
light of hope. On being weighed no one of these lights weighs
differently from the other.’”
