Jehovah’s Witnesses Mobilize Global Response to Threat of Ban in Russia

Threatened with an imminent ban on their worship in Russia, Jehovah’s Witnesses are responding with a direct appeal to Kremlin and Supreme Court officials for relief through a global letter-writing campaign. The Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses is inviting the over 8,000,000 Witnesses worldwide to participate.

On March 15, 2017, Russia’s Ministry of Justice filed a claim with the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation to label the Administrative Center of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Russia as extremist and liquidate it. The claim also seeks to ban the activities of the Administrative Center. If the Supreme Court upholds this claim, the Witnesses’ national headquarters near St. Petersburg will be shut down. Subsequently, some 400 registered Local Religious Organizations would be liquidated, outlawing the services of over 2,300 congregations of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Russia. The branch property, as well as places of worship used by Witnesses throughout the country, could be seized by the State. Additionally, individual Jehovah’s Witnesses would become subject to criminal prosecution for merely carrying out their worship activities. The Supreme Court is expected to rule on the claim on April 5.

“The Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses wants to heighten attention to this critical situation,” states David A. Semonian, a spokesman at the Witnesses’ world headquarters. “Prosecuting non-violent, law-abiding citizens as if they were terrorists is clearly a misapplication of anti-extremist laws. Such prosecution is based on completely false grounds.”

The Witnesses’ global campaign is not without precedent. Nearly 20 years ago, Witnesses wrote to defend their fellow worshippers in Russia in response to a smear campaign by some members of the government in power at the time. Additionally, Witnesses have initiated past letter-writing campaigns to motivate government officials to end persecution of Witnesses in other countries, including Jordan, Korea, and Malawi.

“Reading the Bible, singing, and praying with fellow worshippers is clearly not criminal,” adds Mr. Semonian. “We hope that our global letter-writing campaign will motivate Russian officials to stop this unjustifiable action against our fellow worshippers.”

All I can say is that if an organization in any country insists on breaking the laws of that country then it has to expect consequences.

.
They are not breaking any laws and there is freedom of religion guaranteed under Russia's constitution.

This is a miscarriage of justice based on religious prejudice and deliberate misinformation. There is nothing extremist or subversive in the teachings of Jehovah's Witnesses. We are the most peace-loving people on earth.

I remind you that this is a DIR.

this whole thing in Russia stinks of involvement of religion pushing government to do the things religion wants. time will tell.

We well know that Putin used to be in the KGB and has a belief that power is so important. Even though I don't know anything about him in regards to religion, my guess, based on what his past is and what his actions are, is that religion he probably views as being a weakness of character.

How, specifically, might others support you?

We have been instructed to write letters of protest to the Russian government, without resorting to insults, but in a genuine manner pleading for justice to be done, and freedom of religion to be honored under their constitution.

There is no way that JW's can ever be a threat to any government. If all citizens were JW's, there would be no need of police, jails or courts. The health system and hospitals would not be over burdened with drug abuse and alcoholism. There would be no smoking related deaths either.

Anti-terrorism laws.....? against people who decry violence? It makes no sense. Its just an abuse of power by a regime noted for its violations of human rights.

Here Deeje is correct. According to the JW Crime Map there doesn't seem to be any special problems with JW's breaking the law in Russia. JW Crime Map

You seem to forget that we do not tolerate law breakers in our congregations....People are always going on about why we disfellowship those who break God's law or the laws of the land.....so it appears that we're damned if we do and damned if we don't. Those who commit crimes and are unrepentant about it, are no longer deemed to be part of our brotherhood. That makes the map rather meaningless. A Christian is known by their conduct, not the label they wear.

I see! So it's not possible for Russia to charge a Jehovah's Witness with any crime because the moment they committed the crime they seized to be a Jehovah's Witness?

Hmm. So in Russia, handing out copies of the Watchtower and offering to have bible study is considered extremism? Hope things get better there Deeje.

How many people who commit crimes are asked what religion they follow?

If you are a convicted criminal (and I mean having real evidence against you rather than planted evidence or false testimony) then what does your religion matter? If you claim to be a Christian, and you treat God's laws with disdain or disrespect, then Jesus doesn't know you.....and doesn't want to know you. (Matthew 7:21-23)

The only JW's in jail are those who either converted in prison due to our prison ministry, or they were reinstated in jail because they repented of their crime. Sentence still has to be served regardless.

The moment you unrepentantly seek to break God's laws, you cannot call yourself a Christian. Of course we are all under obligation to inform ourselves about what those laws entail, because as any nation will tell you...ignorance of the law is no excuse.

Thank you David....only those who really know us can see how wrong this is. It applies to others as well, so this heavy handed attitude will be hard on a lot of minorities in Russia. But Jehovah knows how to handle things.
