How do You Exercise?

How do you exercise?

Right now, I'm starting a running program, to get rid of some flab, and gain some cut. I will also be restarting my weightlifting program as a well.

My running program, which I started tonight, works like this:

Run ever second day.

Runs 1-3:

Five-minute warm up walk.
Alternate 60 seconds of running, with 90 seconds of walking, for a total of 20 minutes. (Tonight I ended up doing 30 minutes, because I was counting in my head. :bonk: )

Runs 4-6:

Warm up walk.
Alternate 90 seconds of running, with two minutes of walking, for a total of 20 minutes.

Runs 7-9:

Warm up walk.
Run 90 seconds, walk 90 seconds, run three minutes, walk three minutes, run 90 seconds, walk 90 seconds, run three minutes, walk three minutes.

Runs 10-12:

Warm up walk.
Run three minutes, walk 90 seconds, Run five minute, walk two point five minutes, run three minutes, walk 90 seconds, run five minutes.

Runs 13-15:

Warm up walk.
Run 0.8 kilometres, walk 0.4 kilometres, run 0.8 kilometres, walk 0.4 kilometres, run 0.8 kilometres.

Runs 16-18:

Warm up walk.
Run 0.8 kilometres, walk 0.4 kilometres, run 1.2 kilometres, walk 0.4 kilometres, run 0.8 kilometres.

Runs 19-21:

Warm up walk.
Run 4 kilometres.

Runs 22-24:

Warm up walk.
Run 4.4 kilometres.

Runs 25-27:

Warm up walk.
Run 4.8 kilometres.

And then evaluate my progress and see where to go from there!

Do you think these are reasonable goals? Does anybody want to do this with me? What do you do for exercise?

That sounds like a great plan, Druidus--it's very helpful to set up gradual goals like you have. And it's good that you continue the exercise for 20 minutes to strengthen your heart and lungs.

I enjoy running, and Ceridwen is quite a runner. I think it really is the best form of exercise, besides swimming. Some advice: as your runs get longer, try to stay on grass rather than concrete as much as possible--it's easier on the knees and ankles and can prevent shin splints.

I walk to school and back everyday (25 min)... and just about everywhere I go. (Nothing like inconveniencing your friends w/ bikes! >:) )

I think about how awesome it would be to be ripped and beefy, but there's one massive barrier I'd have to cross... effort. If effort wasn't a pre-req, I'd be superman.

Believe it or not, I am a big fan of weight-training (especially bodybuilding). It takes the stress of my mind from work and at the same time, keeps me healthy. :) I also follow a good diet and keep my saturated fat levels down.

I do martial arts alot. Not as much as I did say, 3 months ago. But I meditate alot more now. I still have my usual pushups and situps everyday. And once a week I have a gruelling black belt class with my grandmaster.

When it comes to exercise, I have to admit that I hate any routine. I prefer getting my workout by working and playing. Daily chores with more strenuous weekly, monthly chores not only keep my home and property clean and tidy, it give the satisfaction of knowing I have done something to take care of myself. When it comes to play like hiking or working out the horses, the spiritual rewards are endless. For some reason it makes no sense to me for a person to earn money to hire people to clean their house and mow their lawns, just so they have time to go to the gym to workout. The way I see it the more I do for myself and my family the more rewards I get physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

Go for it, Druidus!!

You'll have to keep us all posted on your progress! It's so great that you're getting out there and doing it, because running really is a great habit to get into. It might seem like a drag at the beginning, but you'll feel so good once you finally hit that 4k, and before you know it, you'll actually find that you look forward to your runs! (Jiggah wha?)

Ellie_A! Another horsewoman!!

I ride almost every day, and it is pretty much a full-body workout for me. I also try to run every day, even if I only have time for 15 minutes or so. Horses take care of my abs and arms, but sometimes I do crunches and weights anyways. You might think that I do all this to stay healthy, but you'd be wrong. Really, it's because I want to keep up my reputation of being unbeatable at arm wrestling. So far, so not good, but we're getting there! :biglaugh:

I already feel like running again, but I don't want to get burnout, so I'm waiting a day between each run for now. I'm used to the burn because I used to weightlift (and I'll be taking that up again soon). I can't wait to run my first kilometre, let alone four!

Do you run in the cold weather or do you have an indoor track someplace?

Pah, you are so funny!

I walk several times a week, at least a mile and a half each time. I lift weights and do stretching, squats, etc. I also have a treadmill and stationary bike. I don't spend long periods of time on them, that keeps me from getting bored. I take stairs as much as possible. Also, my job is making sales calls, so I'm in and out of the car several times a day and lots of walking to the offices.

I lift weights 4 days a week, one week heavy reps and light weight, next week heavy weight and light reps.

On the weekend, I go rowing near the Ocean with my wife on Saturdays, and I go hiking every other Sunday and mountain biking the other Sundays. It is pretty cool when I have my son, he loves to go too. I have a backpack designed to carry a child and I try to carry him all day (he is 4 years old), it is great excercise. When I mountainbike, I have a little attachment (like a cart) that goes on the back, which straps him into it....he will yell at me if I don't go fast enough, so it makes for a great workout :)

Like Master Vigil I study martial arts so mine is probably similar to his. I am heavey into ab work and pushups too. When I was kickboxing I jogged shadowboxed jumped rope and did bagwork. I have sense stopped. It was strange that noboby listed yoga. I am 36 and I found that the stretching (martial arts stole--ummm i mean borrowed...most of its knowledge on stretching from yoga) has benefited me just as much any of the cardio or any other exercises. I am figuring that long when I stop doing situps pushups and cardio I am still going to be stretching.

I run in the cold weather. It's not too bad now, averaging only -17C to -25C. I'm kind of worried when it really turns to winter! (up to -45C, not including the wind chill) I'll need a portable heater to run! :p

LOL, @ pah!! Ah, funny guy, funny guy...

Druidus-- Underarmor and indoor tracks are my best friends in winter. :)

Coincidentally, I just got back from Dick's Sporting Goods store with some new shorts and Aesics running shoes...my old ones got worn out because I used them for both running and day to day wear. *slaps forehead* Some advice for you Druidus: don't make the same mistake I did--get a nice pair of running shoes that you use only for running!

A number of porblems arise due to my location. Cold weather, first of all. Secondly, the fact that you can't find a stor that sells size 12 shoes, let alone the 13 that I need! Right now, I've got a pair of hiking shoes, and a pair of outdoor running shoes. Hopefully, they'll last at least till Yule.
