Why do people believe that it was god and not something else?

This is puzzling in religion, during the ancient times, it looks like people believed in an awareness that claims to be god. It said that it was that god that took them out from bondage in egypt, why specify it that way. If you are a god, you would just say "I am the most powerful being in this universe". "Follow me and you will be with me and greatly rewarded". I am just being sarcastic, because if anyone of us claims that he/she is god I am pretty sure we would call the nearest police or mental institution. Now whats different today than yester years? Why do you think they believed that god is truly speaking to their leaders or to themselves. Maybe an exception is the info that Beckysoup mentioned that their prophet of her faith also got the message from it to complete their faith or may I say bible. I wondered why believe in it at all?

If an awareness says its god, there is nothing to support if it is truly what it claims. You might say the opposite but so what if it is god?

Why read and write poetry, why look at the sunset - why paint a picture or train a dog to do tricks? Why create and listen to music or have sex or overhaul an engine?

Why build a house in the country?

Let's just eat, drink, and be happy for tomorrow we die.

Great leaders nowadays use the concept of God also. Not directly saying they are instructed, but who says the leaders in the past said so?
