Have you read it?

What are your thoughts?

Are you going to see the movie?

Read anything else by Dan Brown?

Is this book/movie anti-Catholic/anti-Christian?

Just wondering.:D
Scott

To make money..... mission accomplished!

Hehe.... I don't believe anyone who calls him anti-Catholic has even read the book... I was really suprised how many good things about the faith he wrote in the book.

Have you read it?
I tried... mission failed :p

What are your thoughts?
What little I read, at my father's instigation, really put me off...

Are you going to see the movie?
Probably not, until it comes on T.V.

Read anything else by Dan Brown?
Angels and Demons, was rather good

Is this book/movie anti-Catholic/anti-Christian?
Not sure...

What do you think his intention was when writing it?
In a recent interview I watched on T.V. he said his intention was to use science to cause people to question their beliefs...

Scott, although a fictitious novel, what if any harm do you think it has caused and will cause for Christians in general?

Word in the street is that it contains a "fact" page that gives the impression that half-truths are really truths. What do you make of this?

I think that those people who read the book and take everything presented as "historical" as truth they could be led astray.... but in general I don't think it could affect Christians any more than any other work of fiction.

I own the soft-cover version that has no such page, but I can't say that the hardcover edition did not contain one.... either way, my hope would be that any "facts" presented that contain information that is unsettling to the individual reader would prompt them to do further research from a variety of sources. As you know, we have nothing to fear from the truth, so a sincere reader who follows it up with some research will probably grow in their love of Christ and the Church.... and if they were non-Catholic to begin with, wow.... imagine millions of non-Catholics FINALLY reading about history, the Church Councils, the early Fathers..... wow, millions of converts! :)

Although a work of fiction, the book claims to be meticulously researched, and it goes to great lengths to convey the impression that it is based on fact. It even has a "fact" page at the front of the book underscoring the claim of factuality for particular ideas within the book. As a result, many readers-both Catholic and non-Catholic-are taking the book's ideas seriously.

The problem is that many of the ideas that the book promotes are anything but fact, and they go directly to the heart of the Catholic faith. For example, the book promotes these ideas:
  • Jesus is not God; he was only a man.
  • Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene.
  • She is to be worshiped as a goddess.
  • Jesus got her pregnant, and the two had a daughter.
  • That daughter gave rise to a prominent family line that is still present in Europe today.
  • The Bible was put together by a pagan Roman emperor.
  • Jesus was viewed as a man and not as God until the fourth century, when he was deified by the emperor Constantine.
  • The Gospels have been edited to support the claims of later Christians.
  • In the original Gospels, Mary Magdalene rather than Peter was directed to establish the Church.
  • There is a secret society known as the Priory of Sion that still worships Mary Magdalene as a goddess and is trying to keep the truth alive.
  • The Catholic Church is aware of all this and has been fighting for centuries to keep it suppressed. It often has committed murder to do so.
  • The Catholic Church is willing to and often has assassinated the descendents of Christ to keep his bloodline from growing.
Catholics should be concerned about the book because it not only misrepresents their Church as a murderous institution but also implies that the Christian faith itself is utterly false.

Should other Christians be concerned about the book?

Definitely. Only some of the offensive claims of The Da Vinci Code pertain directly to the Catholic Church. The remainder strike at the Christian faith itself. If the book's claims were true, then all forms of Christianity would be false (except perhaps for Gnostic/feminist versions focusing on Mary Magdalene instead of Jesus).

Thank you.

Could you elaborate on this thread,is the title of this forum indicate clearly that this is same faith debates,or is there an underlying clause meaning same denominations,as a born again Christian I have the same faith in God and Jesus as do the catholics and therefore qualify for this thread,if in fact it is ,as it states on the title of the forum,"same faith debates"
I am slightly confused.
Nor did I see it exclusively indicate as to "Only Catholics"
No sweat just looking for clarity on this one?

I am half way through the book and saw the movie last night. I thought that it was very well done. Fiction, but a great story. If the people who are inclined to believe it are being even more niave and ignorant than they already are. All of us Roman Catholics know it's not true as well as many other people. So why do we care what everyone thinks about us, they already have their beliefs about us.
