Why are many extreme Christians so nasty?

How is it that you know so much about these so called "extreme Christians". It sounds to me that you pulling stuff out of a hat, that conform with the trends of the media. Who are probably anti-bible for one reason or another.

I find it odd that you singled out Christians as being nasty. You should get out more. There is nasty going on all over the world.
Anyone from any religion who thinks they have the right to judge others based on their own self-righteous beliefs is putting more effort into self than righteousness.

Most people I come in contact with including Christians are pleasant and enjoyable to interact with. From time to time I find it difficult getting to know someone with extreme and inflexible views. Because discussion about religion can be divisive most people in New Zealand avoid talking about it or at least cautious about who they talk to about what. Its interesting being on RF where we have conversations openly that are not so easy to have in my culture.

Its the media's fault! No, actually its the fault of women. I'm pretty sure, just ask any man. On the other hand it could be because of money, since its the root of all kinds of problems. You know, passing the plate and such. That could be it.

I think it is more accurate to say that "Certain people are nasty".

Our personalities are formed by a combination of experiences, genetics and other biological factors. A nasty person was very likely always going to BE a nasty person (generally speaking). Now, was that person's personality warped or changed by their association with a religion? Possibly. But I feel that, more often than not, you can say that a person is who they are and their association with whatever cultural/religion institution they happen to belong is more incidental to that. There are just too many factors that make us, us, to single one out.

In other words: there are plenty of nasty people, and they are quite liberally spread around to every group.

To my way of thinking is that these people who are extremist are afraid, their belief system is all they have, they don't have much more than that, because of this they will defend their treasured beliefs at all coast. Of course all belief systems can be like this but you would think being religious would make people more better than they are, to love their neighbor as themselves, but no, they can't, because they can't even love them self, and if you cannot love your self, then you cannot love others.

I think that many people in general can be nasty, but many Christians believe that by telling themselves that they believe this or that, that somehow people won't notice their nastiness. And that's just simply not true.

In my experience and as others have said, it's people that are nasty. I worked with a nasty Christian chap, and other Christians were just as repulsed by his behaviour as I was, perhaps more. One even apologised on behalf of her faith. Knowing full well I was a Hindu, she still told me I was a better Christian that that scum,

In my experience, many human beings are self-centered and nasty. Whatever religion they grew up with doesn't really change what kind of person they are, just the ways and means they have to judge and abuse others.

Extremist anything is off putting. Most if not all religious extremists have the potential to be dangerous if the circumstances allow for it.
Maybe with the exception of Jainism. If only because, well what are they going to do really? Pacify you to death?

(... but not just you, all of us.)
Jesus saves (we don't), so those beating anyone up didn't understand the message.
Sorry... I don't much understand any of this. You quoted only part of my post "for truth" - the part about God not being in my heart - then stated "but not just you, all of us." Was this saying God is not in anyone's heart? Then you went on to say "Jesus saves (we don't)" - is this saying that you believe that God isn't in people's heart, but Jesus is? That Jesus saves, but believers don't? And then on top of all of that, you follow up with "so those beating anyone up didn't understand the message." Who is beating who up? Atheists beating up Christians? And is the beating up part what's on their heart instead of Jesus, and that's why they can't understand the message? 'Cause they need to stop beating people up?

I'm just completely confused, and I fear that you will be unable to adequately clarify. If all of this is religious vernacular, or Jesus tech-talk, it will probably simply remain lost on me forever. Which is fine... in the end it isn't going to matter. It just seemed like you were trying to tell me something. This reminds me of that moment from Finding Nemo just after the dad fish got an earful of surfer-dude speak from the young turtle: "It's like he's trying to speak to me, I know it!"

'literalist' Christian is generally code for theistic, /some type of traditional Christian, or traditional theology.
''extreme'' Christian per thread seems to have the same meaning.

True. They usually are unable or refuse to acknowledge the mythical elements employed by the author to convey a literal truth.

Many moderate Christians are thoroughly decent people, like my own children, who aren't Biblical literalists, thank goodness. However, I have encountered, throughout my life, many of those who believe you have to be 'saved' in order to go skywards, who are not nice at all. I can only think because they believe in the 'once saved always saved' dogma, they will get waved through the pearly gates, however bad they are. I have known quite a few of the 'saved' who were dishonest, and sexually abusive! The bigots who use the Bible as an excuse for condemning homosexuality are also very unpleasant too. Being gay is normal, not perverted!
It is no wonder many people are put off religion when they encounter people like that.

Extreme anybodies tend to be rather nasty in general

I work with a Christian who believes in the literal story of creation along with all the other OT stories, believes only Christians can be saved, and is waiting for Jesus to come again on clouds that can be seen by everyone to name a few. Regardless she is a happy friendly person. She can imply that I'm going to hell with a smile on her face and just wants to guide me from the error of my ways. She's sincere. Why take offence?
