USA Only: Interesting Facts About Your State

Neo Deist

Th.D. & D.Div. h.c.
Please share some interesting facts about your state. I'll do Alabama later today. Have some errands to do before a scout troop camp out tonight...

Edit: ok, got a few minutes delay so I will go ahead and do Alabama now!

1. Alabama introduced Mardi Gras to the western world. New Orleans took after Mobile, AL.

2. The Saturn V rockets that put the Apollo missions on the moon were built in AL.

3. It is the only state with all the natural resources needed to make iron and steel. Birmingham was nicknamed Steel City because of it. Auto manufacturers are now pouring into AL because of the natural resources.

4. AL has the only Mercedes Benz plant outside of Germany.

5. Honda Pilots, Ridgelines, Odysseys and Acura MDXs are made in AL.

6. AL was nicknamed the Heart of Dixie because Montgomery was the original capital of the Confederacy.

7. AL resident Sequoyah devised the phonetic, written alphabet of the Cherokee language.

8. Hank Aaron, Joe Louis and Willie Mays are all from AL.

9. Huntsville, AL is the "rocket capital of the world" and contains Redstone Arsenal. Huntsville is a major hub of NASA.

10. The Alabama Crimson Tide football team has won more championships than any other college team since polling started in the 1930s.

The first train robbery in the United States occurred in Indiana on October 6, 1866. A gang known as the Reno Brothers stopped an Ohio and Mississippi train in Jackson County and made off with $13,000.

The North Pole actually doesn't get any letters for Santa Claus, believe it or not. Indiana does. Every year, the aptly named town Santa Claus, IN, actually receives those letters in the thousands. Even better, each and every one of those letters do get a reply!

Indiana is the first state to have a chapel inside the state capitol, built in memory of former first lady Beth Bowen

Indiana just might be the only state with so many professional baseball teams not in the Major Leagues.
There are five of them: the Evansville Otters, the Fort Wayne Tin Caps, the Gary Southshore Railcats, the Indianapolis Indians, and the South Bend Silver Hawks.
Not one team in Indiana has ever been a club in the Major Leagues.

Wabash, Indiana was the first electrically lighted city in the World. Charles F. Brush of Cleveland, Ohio wanted to publicly test his new invention, the "Brush Light", and Wabash, Indiana agreed to test the lights. On March 31, 1880, four 3,000-candlepower Brush Lights mounted atop the courthouse, illuminating the city with a flood of light. The glow was visible at a mile’s distance, and about 10,000 citizens witnessed that milestone in the history of electricity

The very first professional baseball game had played in Fort Wayne, Indiana on May 4, 1871.

90 percent of the world's popcorn comes from Indiana.

Despite Minnesota's claim on its license plates

that it has 10,000 lakes, it's misleading. Minnesota has 11,842 lakes that are 10 acres or larger according to Minnesota's Department of Natural Resources.

If you can read this, you are as lucky as I am.
1. In Texas, you can be legally hung by the neck for applying graffiti to cattle.

2. If Texas were it own country, it would be the 40th largest in size.

3. A sad fact, if it were its own country, it would be the 5th largest producer of petroleum, and the 7th largest producer of greenhouse gases. It leads the US, of course.

4. Unlike any other state in the US, the Texas flag is flow at equal height to the US flag. This is because. . . Not sure why.

5. Chuck Norris is an honorary Texas ranger.

It was on fire when I laid down on it.
Texas is one of four majority/minority states, which means that it's largest demographic group (white, non Hispanics) makes up less than 50 percent of it's population. Other such states are California, Hawaii, and Arizona.

I have the DNA test to prove that I am absolutely the whitest person I have ever known (98 percent northern European and 2 percent European in general - no Indian princesses or mulatto delta queens or Holocaust survivors or victims in my family tree, contrary to folk lore). So I am a minority in Texas.

I love it here.
